Welcome to the new-look Cheltenham Table Tennis League website. We have lots of information on the site, including our history, weekly league results, team/player averages and match reports. We are proud to be one of the UK's longest established leagues, having been established in 1923 - long before even the ETTA or the ITTF were formed.
From humble beginnings our little league has developed into a force to be reckoned with. Some of our best players have represented England and our County teams continue to raise the bar in tournaments nationwide. The CTTA is renowned for its junior training schemes and tournaments, such as the four star Cotswold Open that attracts the best players from all over the UK. The ETTA (English Table Tennis Association) selected Cheltenham to host two international table tennis matches in 2003 where England played Russia and Romania.
We are known as a very friendly league that caters for all table tennis abilities. New players are always welcome - whether your a veteran looking to join a league team or somebody that is new to the sport, looking for a game of 'ping pong'. During the season, training and practice nights are held at the Cheltenham Sports College on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm - 9.30pm from September to July. If you would like to join our league, or just feel like a casual knock around within a friendly atmosphere, head on over to the 'Contact' page for more details.

Finally, Gill and I would like to thank all those who entered (there would be no tournament without you!), those who weren’t playing but came along to watch and help, especially with the umpiring, and those who helped in other ways to make the day run smoothly. So, thank you (in no particular order, and apologies for any omissions) Paul Perks, Alan Thomas, Mike Fry, Pete Cruwys, Pete Wood, Tony Iles, Dave Harvey, and the assorted contingents from Tirley, Tewkesbury and Winchcombe. See you all again next year.

Eyes down for a full house and all that!
And The Winners Are!
Cheltenham
A,
comprising largely of the Harvey family,
reigned supreme this season to take the
Division One title, closely followed up by
last years winners
Newlands A.
The
Winchcombe
Cavaliers braved
the storm and just managed to escape
relegation, but at the expense of their club
mates
Winchcombe
Wizards,
who were unable to show their magic and the
Winchcombe Warriors,
who failed to show their fighting spirit.
For the first time in many years, the Division Two title was decided in the final week of play. Cheltenham C led the division for the majority of the season, but Newlands B forged a very strong challenge in the last few weeks. Newlands managed to beat Tirley Tigers 10-0 in their last match to tie the leaders with 163 points, but Cheltenham C lifted the title because they had won more matches. Tirley Tigers and Saracens D struggled all season and could not get out of the relegation zone, despite some close matches that weren't exactly reflected in the final match results.
Title favourites Tewkesbury B didn't disappoint as they won the Division Three trophy with relative ease. Cheltenham E finished runners up. The young Cheltenham G and F sides propped up the foot of the table, but must have gained some well needed experience that they can build on for next season.

Gloucestershire County
Senior
Table Tennis Results
In the last round of the County Table Tennis Championships, Gloucestershire earned the right to stay in the Premiership. In their first year in the Premiership, the players knew they were going to have to work very hard in order to maintain their status. Gloucestershire knew that they had to beat both Leicestershire and Berkshire to avoid relegation and raised their games to achieve this goal.
A squad of Gloucestershire players travelled to Hall Green in Birmingham to compete. The squad consisted of Dave Harvey, Darren Griffin, Brian McRandle, Suzy Robinson, Choi Sze Toi and Natasha Hurd. They competed over two days against Berkshire, Devonshire, Leicestershire and Essex with mixed results. Natasha Hurd was the player of the weekend winning all her games in the two matches that she played in.
Gloucestershire 2 v Devonshire 8
In this match the team
knew they were going to have their work cut
out as Devonshire were one of the teams
competing for the Premiership title. Darren
Griffin must have thought he was in with a
very good chance of beating Craig Bryant,
who is highly ranked in England, when he was
leading in the fifth and final set.
Unfortunately this was not meant to be as
Bryant went into overdrive and stole the
game away winning
11 - 8. Griffin did manage a win in this
county encounter by beating Jon May over
four sets.
Choi Sze Toi also won a game for Gloucestershire beating Sally Smith in five sets.
Essex 7 v Gloucestershire 3
Essex, also one of the teams who began the weekend with hopes of winning the title also finished well and they beat Gloucestershire 7-3.
Clive Carthy and Sarra Wang both won twice with Clive’s 11-8 in the fifth set victory against Dave Harvey the closest of the match. Fellow Veteran, Darren Griffin, beat both of Essex’s “young pretenders” – Vytas Rybakas and Ashley Stokes in five ends. Sarra Wang produced her best performance of the weekend beating Choi Sze Toi 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.
Leicestershire 3 v Gloucestershire 7
Dave Harvey won both of his encounters with fair ease. He beat Keith Fellows over four sets and then took down Chris Rogers over three sets to earn his county points.
Darren Griffin and Brian McRandle also won points for the county by both beating Amrish Rana. Griffin crushed Rana in three sets whilst McRandle battled it out over five set to eventually emerge triumphant. Natasha Hurd won her two games with ease against Joanne Kennedy and Karen Smith. She won both games in three straight sets. Choi Sze Toi also took down Joanne Kennedy in three sets.
Berkshire 4 v Gloucestershire 6
Choi Sze Toi was first to taste victory with a great win in four sets over Melanie Farquhar who is ranked in the top 20 senior ladies in England. She also went on to beat Susan Johnson over five sets. Natasha Hurd also beat Farquhar with ease over four sets and Johnson over three sets.
Darren Griffin won maximum points for Gloucestershire with a win in three sets over Martin Adams and in four sets over Richard Andrews.
Gloucestershire finish in 6th place in the Premiership table.

FROM THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE TABLE TENNIS ASSOCIATION
We are organising the CHELTENHAM COTSWOLD JUNIOR 4*/3* TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT at Cheltenham College Sports on SATURDAY AND SUNDAY APRIL 5th and 6th, 2008.
There is a very strong entry from boys and girls (U13, U15 and U18 ) from most of the Counties in England, a large group from Wales and some from Ireland and Guernsey. There are over 150 competitors on Saturday and over 130 on Sunday, necessitating the use of 20 tables. The fitness and speed of these players is of a very high standard and worth seeing.
Boys and Girls U13 and U15
events run from 8.30.a.m. to Final rounds at
8.00.p.m on Saturday
Boys and Girls U18 events run from
9.00.a.m.to Final rounds at 7.00.p.m on
Sunday
This is Gloucestershire’s major event and it subsidises the County matches and the Gloucestershire Closed Championships and keeps League affiliation fees to the County very low.
Although we have over 28 Qualified Umpires from Gloucester and around the country, they are primarily for the 4* events and knockout rounds.
We would appreciate the help of local League players at certain times on Saturday and Sunday with umpiring/managing the 3* group events, and umpiring some K.O rounds
Let me know if you can help on SATURDAY APRIL 5th from 8.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. or on SUNDAY APRIL 6th from 2.00 p.m. to 6.00.p.m.
PLEASE RING ME on 01242 527563 or email me at pcruwys@sky.com to confirm if you can help for 2 or 4 hours, and if so which day and time.
