Newlands Park At The
Top
Title favourites
Newlands Park B stormed to a 10-0 win over
Cheltenham D thanks to maximums from Andy East, Andy Richards and Ken
Smith. Matt Mulcahy offered some resistance, forcing his match with Richards
into a deciding fifth set.
Tewkesbury A made an impressive start with a 9-1 win over Saracens D. Rob Amphlett, Simon Lockley and Mike Tyrrell were all undefeated. Dave and Martin Cosnette combined well to win the doubles in five sets against Amphlett and Lockley.
Saracens B were convincing victors in their match with Tirley Tigers. Maximums from Mike Dodwell, Ross Greening and Terry Sims ensured the win which was completed with a straight sets doubles win. During the evening, Dodwell had a titanic and thrilling match of attacking and counter attacking with Lesley Dewick, and he had to come back from 2-1 down to win.
Newlands Park C and Saracens C played out an entertaining draw. Chris White was the star performer, winning all three of his games. He was pushed all the way by Mark Nally, eventually winning 11-5, 11-8, 13-15, 9-11, 11-9. Paul Singh won twice for Newlands Park, whilst Tony Iles did likewise for Saracens. Iles and Nally combined superbly to win the doubles, which ensured a draw for their side.
Cheltenham C were victorious by an 8-2 score line against understrength Newlands Park D. Dave Green and Anand Kershav won both of their matches, whilst Christine Williams picked up one win. Chris Ball of Newlands Park won an exciting match with Williams, securing his victory with an 11-9 win in the fifth set. He then combined well with Julie Taylor to win the doubles, overcoming Green and Kershav 3-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-3, 11-5, thus securing Newlands Park’s second point of the evening.

Flying Start
One of the early title favourites,
Tewkesbury B, started off the season in
resounding style, with a 10-0 win over a young
Cheltenham G side. Alison Lockley, however, was taken to five games
before overcoming Ryan Godwin.
Winchcombe Eagles got off to a winning start against Tewkesbury C. Derek Brown and Wayne Lippett produced one of their epic encounters with Derek eventually coming through 11-8, 8-11,7-11,13-11,11-8.
Civil Service B’s 8-2 win over Cheltenham F was gained the hard way, with four of the sets going to five games. Rob Browning led the way with a maximum, whilst for Cheltenham, Andy Sutherland took Rob and Geoff Wilson all the way before losing out in the fifth.
