Division One
Lakeside Dampens Cheltenham Efforts
Cheltenham 'B' (Nick Smale, Dominic James, Simon Pratten) played Lakeside 'A' (Rich Moores, Roy Fowler, Pete Wood) this week in a match where the Lakesiders earned their second victory of the season by squeaking the narrowest of wins. The Lakesider's Roy Fowler was clearly on form by winning all of his singles despite being pushed the distance by Nick Smale and Simon Pratten. Roy was supported by Pete Wood who won two and Rich Moore's who chipped in with one. Cheltenham's points were won by Nick Smale with two easy wins over Rich and Pete but clearly struggled with Roy's strange rubbers and style. Lakesiders Simon Pratten chipped in with one win and then combined with Nick to take the doubles. Dominic James appears to have been lucky in going home empty handed as the scorecard suggests two titanic struggles with Rich and Pete before losing closely in the deciding set.

Winchcombe Roamers (Nick Mytton, Doug Payne, Matt Hartwell) entertained Cirencester (Mike Kiff, Howard Williams, Gordon Shaw) in a match where Mike Kiff's recent form appears to have abandoned him as he lost all of his games. The Roamers Nick Mytton and Matt Hartwell both enjoyed a maximum, supported by Doug who chipped with two, losing only to Howard. Cirencester's only points were won by Howard with a win over Doug, Howard then combined with Gordon to win the doubles for their second and final point of the evening.

Division Two
Legendary Win For Winchcombe
Both Tirley Tigers and Old Saracens picked up what could later prove to be, in the end-of-season relegation scrap, vital points towards their cause, courtesy of Rob Deeley and Judy Morley, as their game ended in a well deserved 5-5 draw.

Title contenders Cleeve Saracens A and Winchcombe Legends both picked up 10-0 wins.  Legends’ achievement was particularly noteworthy, as they were pushed all the way by Lakeside and had to come through a number of 4 and 5 setters to prevail in the end.

Phil King continued his good run of form for Cheltenham Civil Service, winning two out of three singles plus the doubles with Steve Murton, but was unable in the end to master Mel Garlick who registered a second max in a row for Cheltenham C

But finally, for me, the personal performance of the week must go to Alan Harvey of Cheltenham D who, after a slow start to the season, chalked up a max against the awkward opposition of Tewkesbury A.  But to do so he had to come through a tough 5-setter against Mike Maxwell who fought back from 2-0 down to level the match before finally going down 11-7 in the fifth.

G Men Keep 100% Record In Derby
Cheltenham G preserved their unbeaten tag against Cheltenham E, but only just! James Bird starred for the E team, winning all of his sets, whilst all players in the G side contributed wins, and also snatched the doubles to ensure that honours finished even.

Tewkesbury B powered their way to an impressive 9-1 success over Winchcombe Vikings. Simon Lockley demonstrated that any loss of sleep following the recent arrival of twins had not blunted his game, and along with John Goodchild, won all three sets. Roy Gavin showed the greatest resistance, taking Simon to five games.

Cheltenham F were too strong for Cheltenham H and ran out 10-0 winners. Neither John Whitworth nor Mike Brown dropped a game, but Matt Wells took five games to overcome Martin Holt and Luke Greening.

Cheltenham F continued their bright start to the season with a 6-4 victory over Cleeve Eagles. Cheltenham’s John Whitworth was the only player to secure a maximum. Derek Brown grabbed two wins for the Eagles.

Civil Service B gained their first win of the season against Cheltenham H, who nevertheless claimed their first points in a 4-6 result. For the Cheltenham side, Tom Warner gained his first maximum, which included the notable scalp of Rob Browning. There were a number of very long games, including that in which Geoff Wilson beat Luke Greening 11-8,17-15,11-6.
