Warriors Double Woe
Winchcombe
Warriors entertained Saracens A
this week and despite numerous close games suffered another fairly heavy 8-2
defeat. Both Pete Wood and Roy Fowler of Saracen's enjoyed a hatrick of wins and
were well supported by Richard Moores who chipped in with two. The Warriors only
real resistance came from Richard Bishop who judging by the scores appears to
have been a little unlucky in winning just the one match against Richard Moores,
narrowly losing his other two. Richard then combined with Mike Vick to win the
doubles for the Warriors only other point of the evening.
Cheltenham A played
Winchcombe Cavaliers which resulted in a 9-1 win for Cheltenham A,
the third in a row. The much improved Luke Moffatt of the Cavaliers took the
first set off Dave Harvey in a superb exhibition of loop drives but lost the
next three sets. The match of the night however was Luke against Michael Harvey,
both players attacked fiercely, exchanging loop drives from side to side that
saw Mike come out the winner in four sets. Luke was particularly unlucky as Mike
had his hair cut a couple of days beforehand and was able to see the ball
clearer than normal. The Cavaliers only point of the evening was obtained by
Luke overcoming the much improving Robert Harvey.
A weakened Chelsea Building Society side
played Cheltenham B and paid the penalty
with a hefty 8-2 defeat. Unfortunately for the Chelsea, Guy Greening and Bill
Dawe were unavailable. The individual scores indicate that this was a much
closer match than the scoreline suggests with many games going to a deciding
fifth set. Both Milan Dragojlovic and Barry Turner of Cheltenham B enjoyed a
hatrick of wins, supported by Russell Hayward who contributed one point with a
win over David Metcalfe. The Chelsea's two points were won by Simon Moysey and
Dominic Wynn-Sands who both beat Russell Hayward.

Division Two
Cheltenham C Turn Up
The Gas
CCS A
emerged as 6-4 victors over Saracens D in a
closely fought encounter thanks to a first ever maximum in this division for Jon
Nixon. His three wins sent CCS A towards victory, but they did not all come
easily, particularly his five set defeat of Dave Cosnette by a score line of
8-11, 5-11, 11-6, 12-10, 13-11. Phil King won twice for CCS A on his first
outing of the season, as did Dave Foulser for Saracens D.
Cheltenham C kept their unbeaten run alive with a comfortable 8-2 home victory against Tewkesbury A. John Gaskill maintained his 100% record with a fine maximum. 100% records fell as the night went on, with Rob Amphlett misfiring against Gaskill to lose his, but overcoming the previously undefeated Anand Kershav. This was an amazing match of attacking strokes and counter blocking and featured an extraordinary comeback. Amphlett found himself 2-1 and 10-4 down in the fourth set, although all of the sets had been very close until this point. Amazingly, he battled back to win that set and ultimately the match, with some amazing shots from both players along the way. Dave Green also won twice for Cheltenham C as their class shone through.
Saracens C completed an excellent 6-4 win over rivals Saracens B. Mike Dodwell managed a maximum for Saracens B, but it was not easy, and he was taken to a nail-biting fifth set by his former team mate Neil Penny. Both Terry Sims and Ross Greening were unfortunate and lost crucial games along the way as Mark Nally and Tony Iles picked up two wins apiece. To salvage a draw, Saracens B needed to win the doubles, but Iles and Nally were not feeling charitable and took the doubles in the fifth set to squeeze home with an excellent 6-4 victory.
Newlands Park D ran out 7-3 winners against a competitive and valiant Tirley Tigers team. Chris Ball and Mike Gleeson were in good form for Newlands Park D, winning all of their singles matches, although they were both pushed all the way by Lesley Dewick, who was unlucky to lose out to both of them in the fifth set. Dewick won once for Tirley, a super victory over Julie Taylor, and Pete Humble also picked up one win for the Tigers. They then combined to produce a stunning doubles win over the previously undefeated Ball and Taylor.

Division Three
Alan's Still Cooking
Despite having only two players available,
Cheltenham F did extremely well to snatch
three points off a strong Tewkesbury B side.
Zac France was successful against Alison Lockley and John Teare, the latter also
losing out to Andy Sutherland. For Tewkesbury, Alan Cook maintained his 100%
record.
Although not at their best, Winchcombe Eagles were able to secure a 7-3 win over Civil Service, who were a player short. Winchcombe were unable to overcome the steady play of Jeremy Turberville, who won all of his sets in three games.
Tewkesbury C encountered tough opposition against early title favourites Saracens E who recorded a 10-0 victory.
The Tewkesbury side fought a closely contested battle with Cheltenham F, eventually sharing the points. Tewkesbury’s star was Neil Cameron, who was the only player from both sides to win all of his sets, supported by Stan Stone who won two. All of the Cheltenham players pitched in with at least one win each, and they ensured a draw by winning the doubles.
