Lakeside Freezes At
Cheltenham
In a battle at the top
of the table, Winchcombe Wizards proved
their superiority in this division this season with an 8-2 win over title rivals
Cheltenham C. A maximum for Nick Davidson
and braces for Keith Ferguson and Chris Lane did the damage. Anand Kershav was
in sparkling form for Cheltenham C, winning twice including an impressive
five-set win over Ferguson, prevailing 12-10, 5-11, 11-8, 10-12, 14-12. Dave
Green was particularly unfortunate in his match with Davidson, going down in
five sets, losing out 11-5, 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 13-15.
Cheltenham C recovered from this shattering defeat to send Lakeside C packing with an impressive 7-3 away win. A maximum for Anand Kershav and braces for Dave Green and Martin Smith earned the points. Barrie Pope and Chris White won once each for Lakeside C and White combined with Graham Chandler to claim a further point in the doubles.
Lakeside B claimed a comprehensive 7-3 win over Tewkesbury A, but none of the home team could produce a victory over Rob Amphlett. Amphlett picked up all three of Tewkesbury A’s points on his way to an impressive maximum. Andy East, Andy Richards and Ken Smith all won twice each for Lakeside B.
Cheltenham D picked up a useful 6-4 home win against high-flying Lakeside D, yet it was Lakeside D’s Chris Ball who was in the best form, winning all three of his matches with relative ease. Chris James and Matt Mulcahy won twice each for Cheltenham D, while Alan Harvey produced a straight sets win over Julie Taylor. Mulcahy was made to work hard by Taylor, winning 11-8 in the fifth set. James and Mulcahy won the deciding doubles in a close contest with Ball and Taylor, emerging victorious by the score line 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6.
CCS A picked up an important 6-4 win over Tewkesbury B. Steve Murton was the pick of the players, winning all three matches, and he was well supported by Dave Hart who claimed a brace. Tewkesbury B’s best player was Michael Maxwell, who won twice, including a convincing four-set win over Hart, interrupting his fine recent run of form. Maxwell was involved in a titanic five-set battle with Murton, losing out 14-12 in the fifth. Simon Lockley, returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, picked up his first win since September. Lockley then combined with Maxwell to win the doubles 11-7, 11-13, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7.

Division Three
Top Two Still Winning
Big
The top two sides both
continued their winning ways. Tirley Tigers
completed a 10-0 win over Cheltenham H
without dropping a game, whilst Old Saracens
proved to be too strong in their 9-1 success against
Civil Service B.
Tiffany Hopton, Roly Holder and Dan Crook each recorded maximums for Cleeve Eagles in a comfortable 10-0 win over Cheltenham H.
Cheltenham H did however fare better against Cheltenham G, with Luke Greening and Martin Dolman both gaining their first individual successes of the season. For Cheltenham G, Ryan Godwin and Mike Robertson won all of their sets.
Youth triumphed over experience as Simon James and Jon Laramy led Cheltenham G to a 7-3 win over Cheltenham E. Jon was involved in two very close five game sets and was victorious in both.
Civil Service B had too much knowhow for a young Cheltenham F side, reflected in a 9-1 scoreline, Alan Thomas and Simon De Mello securing maximums.
