Cirencester dispel Wizards to close gap at the top
Two wins each for
John Atkinson and Len Vowles and a narrow doubles win of 13-11 in
the fifth, gave Cheltenham A a hard earned draw against current
Division One leaders Smiths A. Nick Mytton was unbeaten for
Smiths, and his effort undoubtedly saved them from defeat.
A maximum from Bill Dawe, which included a win over Saracen A's Brian McRandle, could not save Chelsea B.S. from defeat. The Saracens A trio of McRandle, Roy Fowler and Pete Wood took all the remaining sets to win 7-3.
Second placed Cirencester gained some ground on Smiths at the top with a 9-1 win over bottom club Winchcombe Wizards. Rob Willsher and Gordon Shaw had maximums, but Nick Davidson beat David Lloyd to give the Wizards their point.
Three wins each for Michael Harvey and Judy Morley plus the doubles gave Saracens B a comfortable 7-3 victory against Winchcombe Cavaliers.

Division Two
Its all square in Saracens derby
It was derby week
in Division Two for most teams as Saracens, Smiths and Cheltenham all battled
against their fellow club mates. The match between Saracens D and
Saracens C ended in a stalemate with neither team able to exert
any supremacy over the other. For Saracens D Terry Sims and
Mike Dodwell both won two sets with Ross Greening chipping in with
one. Martin Cosnette played well to take a brace for Saracens C
with one set for both Dave Foulser and Dave Cosnette, which meant
the doubles assumed great importance which saw the Saracens C pairing of
the two Daves win relatively comfortably to record a hard earned draw.
The Derby match between Cheltenham B
and Cheltenham C ended in a closely fought 6-4 victory for the
B team. Cheltenham B proved to be more consistent with
all three players scoring two wins apiece, namely Dave Green, Jon
Gaskill and Mike Fry. The mainstay of Cheltenham C was
Milan Dragojlovic who won two with Grant Pawsey aiding with one
set. The doubles were decided by the attacking brilliance of Milan and
Grant over the solid pairing of Green and Fry.
Smiths C have the dubious honour
of being the only team not to have been beaten by table toppers
Smiths B, albeit the score line was a draw and Smiths B
could only field 2 players. For the C team both Paul Singh
and Chris White won one set each, whilst to their credit the B
team fought for their matches ably led by Andy Richards who scored a
maximum and Andy East who managed a one set win and together the two
captured the doubles to scramble a 5-5 draw.
Smiths D did not have much success against an in form Winchcombe Warriors and were consequently beaten by seven sets to three, with Rob Lane increasing in confidence and ability and Neil Lawrie providing his consistent performance, they amassed together two maximums between them for the Warriors. For Smiths, each player notched up one point but were not able to put sufficient pressure on the Warriors to cause any upsets.

Three
Phil is King against Sara's
CCS A condemned
league leaders Saracens E to their second defeat in three weeks
thanks to a hard-fought team performance. Phil King was recapturing the
form of old on his way to a very good, and extremely convincing maximum. He only
dropped one set on his way to defeating Tony Iles, Neil Penny and
Mike Barwick. Iles and Penny claimed braces for
Saracens, which included convincing wins over Steve Murton and
Doug Blades. However, Blades picked up a vital win against Barwick,
having been 2-1 down, and the combination of Murton and King
proved too strong for Iles and Penny in the doubles. A truly topsy
turvy match that may yet influence the destination of the title!
Winchcombe CCC claimed a dramatic and well-deserved 6-4 victory
against Saracens F. John Teare claimed a maximum, and he
was well supported by Dick Prior who claimed a brace. John Adcock
claimed a brace for Saracens and was unfortunate to lose to
Teare, having been 2-1 up. Roy North and Sheila Matthews
picked up the other points for Saracens.
Tewkesbury A stormed to a comfortable 9-1 win against CCS B.
John Goodchild and Mike Tyrrell picked up comfortable maximums,
and they were supported by Simon Lockley who claimed a brace. The match
between Tirley and Cheltenham D has been postponed
and rearranged for two weeks time.

Division Four
Understrength Panthers double disappointment
Winchcombe Panthers
were down to two players for their match against Cheltenham G, but
Mike Fisher excelled in winning all three of his sets for the home side,
who went down 7-3. Cheltenham H were likewise up against only two
Panthers and ran out comfortable 9-1 winners.
Cheltenham G and Cheltenham E are both mid-table, and so their 5-5 draw was no great surprise. Jamie Makepiece continues to improve, and he won all three of his sets for the home side, although he was pushed to five games by both Richard Maint and Chris Pallet.
