Understrength Cheltenham A pay the price
Winchcombe
Cavaliers
7-3 win over the depleted Cheltenham A side came as no surprise as
Cheltenham were without Dave and Michael Harvey. Two
wins each for Graham Brown, Luke Moffat and Darrel Wiltshire
did the trick. However, Milan Dragojlovic put in a superb display to win
all his sets for Cheltenham A. His battle back to win in the fifth
set against Brown to win 12-10, after being two games down, was a great
example of the youngster’s determination.
Rudford have made a good start to their first season in the Cheltenham league. Their 6-4 win against Cheltenham C in the opening week was followed by a 10-0 whitewash of Smiths B. Their team of Dave Hope, Aled Howell and Alan Smith, with Darren Griffin waiting in the wings, look capable of throwing down a serious challenge to champions Smiths A.
Smiths C slumped to their second defeat as Cirencester easily swept them aside 10-0. It looks as if the Smiths boys are going to find points hard to come by in their first season in division one.
Harry Shahlaei was in top form as Cheltenham C romped home 8-2 against their B side. He never looked like dropping a game on his way to a maximum. Roy Morley won the two points for the B team.
Smiths A cruised to the top of the division with a good 8-2 victory against a Chelsea side without Bill Dawe. Matt Hartwell secured a maximum for them which included a fine win in five sets over Guy Greening.

Division Two
Tewkesbury A storm forward
Tewkesbury A
continued their fine start to the season in division two with a 7-3 win over
Saracens D. Rob Amphlett was a comfortable winner of
three games and was well supported by John Goodchild who won two.
Mark Nally put up some resistance, claiming two wins for Saracens.
Cheltenham F and Winchcombe Warriors were involved in a tight 5-5 draw. Richard Bishop was the player of the night, claiming a maximum for the Warriors, with Mike Vick winning twice to support him. Alan Harvey was the pick of the Cheltenham players, also winning twice and overcoming Vick in straight sets. He then combined with Richard Gummow to take the doubles which earned his team the draw.
Cheltenham D cruised to a comfortable 10-0 whitewash of CCS A. Anand Kershav, John Gaskell and Dave Green were all in imperious form, with only three sets on the night going CCS A’s way.
Cheltenham D continued their winning streak by beating Smiths D 8-2. Once again Anand Kershav was in fine form to win all his games.
Cheltenham E recovered from the previous week’s disappointment to complete a 9-1 thrashing of Tirley Tigers. Jamie Makepeace and Christine Williams both claimed excellent maximums and these were supported by a brace from Luke Doyle. Pete Humble won Tirley’s solitary point of the evening.
Winchcombe Wizards started off their campaign with a 10-0 whitewash of Saracens C. Keith Ferguson, Stewart Ratcliffe and Chris Lane had little trouble securing the victory on their return to the division.
The Wizards continued to cast a spell on their opponents and were in impressive form on their way to a 9-1 victory over Smiths D. Keith Ferguson and Nick Davidson both claimed maximums and Stewart Ratcliffe picked up two wins. Smiths D’s Chris Ball picked up an excellent win over Ratcliffe and Julie Taylor was unlucky to leave the match without a win, having pushed Ferguson and Ratcliffe all the way in tight five-set encounters.
Saracens B overcame club rivals Saracens C 9-1 thanks to maximums from Mike Dodwell and Terry Sims. Dodwell was in particularly impressive form, not allowing any of his opponents into the game. Sims too played very well, although it took a 14-12 fifth set victory to overcome Martin Cosnette. Cosnette picked up the C team’s only win with a straight sets victory over Ross Greening.
Smiths D’s 7-3 win over Saracens C was a hard fought encounter with three of the games going to five sets. Julie Taylor scored a maximum for Smiths, ably assisted with braces from Mike Gleeson and Dave Mackman.

Division
Three
Saracens E off to a flying start
The
experienced Saracens E side kicked off their division three
campaign with a 10-0 win over Cheltenham N. Pete McGeough,
Tony Adcock and Roy North had little trouble despatching their
young rivals.
Saracens E followed this up with an 8-2 victory over Tewkesbury C. This time Sheila Matthews and Tony Adcock scored the maximums.
The two sides which topped Division four last season have made promising starts in division three. Tewkesbury B were too good for Cheltenham L, winning 10-0, whilst Winchcombe Eagles recorded the same score against Cheltenham J and also Cheltenham K, for whom Carey Maisey provided stubborn resistance.
CCS B have two 8-2 wins to their credit, overcoming Tewkesbury C and Cheltenham G.
The G side beat Cheltenham L 9-1, and Cheltenham H beat Cheltenham K by the same margin.
Cheltenham M started their season with a 10-0 success over Cheltenham J.
