In Hots Up
This was another fairly disappointing week where two teams were unable to field
a full side.
With only a few games left of the season, it is looking like a two horse race for the title with Cheltenham B leading the table by eleven points over Smiths A. However, Smiths A may be able to take full advantage of their game in hand and narrow the deficit. Even at this late stage, Cheltenham A should not be ruled out as they only trail their B side by a mere three points, having played the same number of games.
Saracens A played a weakened Smiths B side who were unable to field a full side turning up with just two players. Despite the scoreline of 9-1 in Saracens favour, it was not quite the one sided affair it seems. Ken Smith of Smiths did well to beat Rich Moores and also took Suzy Robinson to five sets before losing narrowly in the fifth. Andy Richards of Smiths also took Rich and Suzy to the wire before losing in the deciding fifth set. An in-form Roy Fowler of Saracens was untroubled in reaching his maximum.
A weakened Chelsea A side fielding only two players entertained the Winchcombe Wizards and paid the price with a 3-7 defeat. Dominic Wynn-Sands of Chelsea won two close matches against Nick Davidson and Keith Ferguson, but was unable to overcome the skill of Stewart Ratcliffe who won comfortably in three straight games. David Metcalfe earnt Chelsea's only other point with a win over Stewart Ratcliffe preventing him from obtaining a maximum.
Cheltenham A played their neighbours Cheltenham C in a rather one sided affair. The in-depth strength of Milan Dragojlovic, Jon Atkinson and Gordon Shaw were too much for the C side of Dave Green, John Gaskill, Christine Williams. John Gaskill did record a good win over Gordon Shaw in a close five sets to record the only win for Cheltenham C.
A top of the table clash
between Cheltenham B and Smiths A saw
the honours almost shared thanks largely to Dave Harvey for the B
team, winning a maximum and then combining with youngest son to
win the doubles. This was an exciting match where the scoreline could have
been very different, a number of games were very tight and could possibly
have gone either way. Rob Harvey of Cheltenham B had a
very close game with both Matt Hartwell and Dave White, whilst Paul Perks
also pushed Matt Hartwell to the wire. However, in turn Matt Hartwell
pushed Dave Harvey before losing 11-9 in the deciding set. An excellent
match that must have been good to watch.

Saracens Lead The Pack
Saracens C have put themselves in with more than a fighting chance of
claiming the Division Two title, thanks to a super 6-4 win over fellow
high-fliers Winchcombe Warriors. Mike Dodwell continued his impressive
form for Saracens, winning twice, along with Terry Sims. However, they
were both unable to stop Richard Bishop securing yet another maximum. Ross
Greening chipped in with one win for Saracens and an excellent doubles
win for Dodwell and Sims over Bishop and Jan De Wet ensured a famous victory and
an extremely satisfying end to a fantastic season for the Saracens C
team.
CCS A recorded an impressive 6-4 win over Smiths C. Dave Hart and Steve Murton both claimed impressive braces to set them on their way. Phil King also picked up a hard fought five-set victory over Barrie Pope. However, Smiths C’s Chris White performed the best on the night, claiming a maximum, although he was hard pushed by Hart, winning 11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9. This went someway to avenging defeat earlier in the season. However, it was to be CCS A’s night and Hart and Murton claimed the win with a good victory in the doubles.
Tewkesbury A recorded a 6-4 win over Saracens D. Rob Amphlett remained undefeated, whilst Simon Lockley performed excellently to defeat Mark Nally in four hard-hitting games. Lockley was unlucky in a tight match with Tony Iles, losing 11-8 in the fifth in a ding-dong affair. Iles and Nally were comfortable winners in the doubles over Amphlett and Mike Tyrrell.

Cos Nets A Maximum
Dave Cosnette was the
star turn in Sararacen F’s latest victory over Tewkesbury C. On
the way to his side’s only maximum of the evening, he came back from two games
down to overcome Mike Maxwell 9-11,7-11,11-3,11-6,11-5. Mike beat Dave Foulser
and took Martin Cosnette's 100% record to gain some compensation for
Tewkesbury.
Second placed Tirley Tigers got the better of Cheltenham F, but only just, finally emerging 6-4 winners. In a match of contrasting styles, Cheltenham’s Chris James continued to show excellent form, winning all three of his sets to keep his side in contention to finish in third spot. Dominic James did well to take a game off Pete Humble.
