Win Sara's Derby
Cheltenham A played
Cheltenham B this week. Unfortunately Michael Harvey had to
retire from this match due to personal reasons and will not be playing again for
the foreseeable future. This has effectively scuppered the B
sides strong contention for the title and now makes it a two horse race between
Smiths A and Cheltenham A.
Due to the strength of Cheltenham A and the retirement of
Michael, it was always going to be an up hill battle for the B
side. Dave Harvey was as reliable as ever winning his three singles comfortably
who then combined with youngest son Robert to win the doubles and secure just
four points. Robert is obviously improving every week and was unlucky not to
come away with any points losing in five to Daniel Kolesnik and in four to Milan
Dragojlovic.
A weakened Saracens B with only two players entertained their A side in a match that saw Saracens A romp home with the majority of points. Brian McRandal was untroubled in his wins, although Roy Fowler and Suzy Robinson were unable to handle the awkward game of Alan Smith who gained the B sides only points.
It must be a week of weakened teams as the Chelsea Building Society also played with just two players against Smiths B. They suffered as a result coming away with just three points. Both David Metcalfe and Simon Moysey of CBS A beat Andy Richards of Smiths B and then combined to win the doubles for Chelsea's three points. Both Ken Smith and Andy East were untroubled in their two wins.
Another weakened side Winchcombe Cavaliers played the strong title contenders Smiths A and suffered a 10-0 defeat. The Smiths players comprising Nick Mytton, Doug Payne and Matt Hartwell were largely untroubled in their wins over Keith Ferguson and Craig Norledge of the Cavaliers which puts Smiths A out in front and favourites for the title.
Two full strength teams, the
Winchcombe Wizards played Cheltenham C
and came away with a narrow victory of six games to four. Choi Sze To was
untroubled in winning a maximum, supported by Stuart Ratcliffe who won two. Choi
and Stuart then combined to win the doubles taking the match by 6-4.

Cheltenham D In At The Double
Cheltenham D
completed a whitewash against Saracens E. Maximums for Richard Gummow,
Alan Harvey and Matt Mulcahy ensured the win. Cheltenham went on to win
their fourteenth consecutive doubles match.
Winchcombe Warriors overcame Tewkesbury A by a score line of 6-4. Braces from Jan De Wet and Mike Vick along with a win for Dave MacIntosh set up the victory. Rob Amphlett did his best for Tewkesbury, winning his three matches in straight sets with ease. The deciding doubles went the way of Winchcombe.
Smiths C overcame club counterparts Smiths D 6-4. Braces for Paul Singh and Chris White led the way. However, there was some strong resistance from the D team, and Julie Taylor won twice, including a good victory over Singh, 11-9 in the fifth. Chris Ball also picked up a pair of wins, including a very good straight sets victory over White. Singh and Graham Chandler combined to win the deciding doubles for the C team.
Saracens C completed an excellent win over Smiths C. A maximum from Mike Dodwell and a brace from Dennis Wadley helped them on their way to a 7-3 victory. Terry Sims also chipped in with one good win. Paul Singh was Smiths’ most successful player, winning twice.

Fantastic F's Draw With Top Team
Top of the table
Saracens F were held to a surprise draw by two man Cheltenham F
this week. Chris James played fantastic to record wins over Saracen’s
Dave Foulser, Dave Cosnette and Tony Walsh, and Karl Foster was in devastating form
when he beat the two Dave's to ensure a share in the points. It was left to Cosnette and Walsh to save the day for Saracens as they won the doubles
three straight.
Tirley Tigers beat Civil Service B 10-0 but had to fight hard all the way. Lesley Dewick was pushed hard by Alan Thomas and Geoff Wilson, and took five games to beat each of them. Some of the other sets were equally tight, and were typified by Tony Saxton’s win for Tirley over Geoff Foster, the score being 11-5,11-6,15-17 and 13-11.
Tirley recorded another 10-0 victory, this time over Cheltenham J, but Tirley’s Janie Kirby had to battle to overcome Matt Roberts and Sean Whitelow.
Tirley are presently sitting top of the table for the first time this season, with Saracens 11 points behind but with 2 games in hand.
