Report For 14/10/08

This weeks report is a bumper two week update!

Division One
Dragon Flies For Cheltenham B
Welcome everyone both old and new to a new 2008/2009 Table Tennis season. I believe this is going to be an interesting season with many new faces and new venues and what appears to be a better balanced Division 1. No doubt I will regret those words at the end of the season.

Cheltenham Table Tennis Club B played Winchcombe Cavaliers in a game where I might have forecast the inevitable draw that occurred. Milan 'The Dragon' Dragojlovic of CTTC 'B' was clearly the star of the night winning all of his games quite comfortably and was well supported by Russell Hayward and John Gaskell who won one game each. The Cavaliers points were won by Choi Sze To and Tristan Gretton who each won two. Choi and Tristan then combined to win the doubles and secure the draw for the Cavaliers.

Chelsea Building Society played Cheltenham Table Tennis Club A in a very one sided game that saw a heavy nine games to one defeat for Chelsea. David Metcalfe salvaged the only point for Chelsea with an excellent win over the young Robert Harvey. Playing for the CTTC A for the first time in the Cheltenham league was a player by the name of Chris Hewitt, a name possibly not widely known throughout Cheltenham, but one to look out for as he probably will not lose many games. Welcome to the Cheltenham League Chris.

Lakeside 'A'
played Cirencester 'B' in a match that saw a seven game to three defeat for the Lakesider's who each had a win over Barry Turner. Darren Griffin and Keith Howse were both unbeaten for Cirencester.

Cirencester 'A' played Winchcombe Roamers in a closely contested match that saw the Roamers (previously Smiths) narrowly defeat Cirencester by six games to four. Nick Mytton for the Roamers was in good early season form winning a good maximum that included two five setters against Gordon Shaw and Dave Adamson. Nick was supported by Matt Hartwell who contributed two games and Doug Payne who contributed one. Cirencester's points were won by Dave Adamson with two wins and Howard Williams with one. Gordon Shaw lost all three and if he does not pull his finger out, could be dropped for the rest of the season.

In the second week of the season, Winchcombe Roamers played Cheltenham Table Tennis Club B in a one sided affair that saw the Roamers emerge winners by nine games to one. Nick Smale won the only point for Cheltenham B against Doug Payne.

Winchcombe Cavaliers played Chelsea Building Society in another very one sided match that saw a whitewash for Chelsea. The Cavaliers represented by Tristran Gretton, Craig Norledge, and Choi Sze To all enjoyed comfortable wins over the Chelsea trio of Guy Greening, Dave Metcalfe and Simon Moysey.

Cirencester 'B' played Cirencester 'A' in a derby match that ended in a stale mate draw thanks largely to a fine maximum by the Graham Slack playing for the 'B' side. Graham Slack was supported by his team mates Peter Galea and Will Silto who contributed a win each. Dave Adamson for the 'A' side won two, supported by Mike Kiff and Howard Williams who each won one. Dave and Rob Willsher then combined to win the doubles and secure the draw.

Cheltenham Table Tennis Club 'A' played an unlucky Lakeside 'A' who were unfortunate to be on the receiving end of an 8-2 defeat. The final score does not reflect how close the matches were. Pete Wood and Richard Moores both beat Robert Harvey of Cheltenham 'A' for their only two points of the evening. Suzy Robinson enjoyed two very closely contested games against Mike Harvey and Chris Hewitt and looks to have been very unfortunate in losing all of her games.

Division Two
Lakeside B Are Sailing
Lakeside D got their season off to a flying start against club counterparts Lakeside C. The D team achieved a 7-3 victory thanks largely to a maximum from Chris Ball and a brace from Mike Gleeson. Indeed, Ball won each of his games in straight sets. Julie Taylor chipped in with one win for Lakeside D, and was unlucky to go down in the fifth set to Barrie Pope, having been two sets to love up. Lakeside C’s Pope also beat Gleeson in five sets and Paul Singh picked up one win for the C team. Graham Chandler was unlucky to go home empty-handed losing in five sets to both Taylor and Gleeson, the latter being exceptionally close, going down 5-11, 11-8, 11-7, 12-14, 10-12. Ball and Gleeson also claimed the doubles to ensure a great start for Lakeside D.

CCS A also began the season well with a pleasing 6-4 away win over Cleeve Saracens B. A maximum for Phil King and a brace from Dave Hart set them on their way. Tony Iles won twice for Cleeve Saracens B, whilst Mark Nally was extremely unlucky to lose 12-10 in the fifth set twice, to both Hart and King. CCS A claimed the deciding doubles as King and Jon Nixon defeated Iles and Nally in five sets.

Cleeve Saracens A gained a hard fought victory over Cheltenham D with a 6-4 scoreline. With almost half the matches being won in the fifth game, the new venue had a baptism of fire. The highlight of the evening was the final singles match of the evening between Terry Sims and Matt Mulcahy, which Sims eventually won 13-11, 12-10, 14-16, 12-10, earning his second victory of the night. All games having gone to deuce, it was supposed a divine right must have elected the winner! Mike Dodwell had earlier won twice for Cleeve Saracens A, whilst Chris James and Mulcahy had done likewise for Cheltenham D. Cleeve Saracens A strove to clinch victory as Dodwell and Ross Greening won the doubles in five sets.

Lakeside B stormed to the first whitewash of the season, a 10-0 defeat of Tewkesbury B, although they did not have it all their own way. Maximums for Andy Richards, Ken Smith and Chris White, playing up, were not always easy to come by. New boy Dave Watson pushed Ken Smith all the way to five close sets, whilst John Goodchild put up a good fighting performance in all three of his matches.

Tewkesbury A were on the receiving end of a 9-1 thumping at the hands of Winchcombe Wizards. The Wizards, ably led by Keith ‘Merlin’ Ferguson who did not drop a set all night, won more than half of the games in straight sets, as Nick Davidson secured a maximum and Jacqui Carver won twice. However, Rob Amphlett did win once for Tewkesbury A and Mike Tyrrell can consider himself very unlucky to come away with nothing, going down in five sets to Davidson, having been 2-0 up, and losing 12-10 in the fifth set to Carver.

Winchcombe Warriors made a good start to their season in a tight game against last year’s Division Two winners Cheltenham C. Richard Bishop claimed a hard fought maximum, whilst Graham Fisher chipped in with two wins. Anand Keshav was the pick of Cheltenham C’s players, winning twice.

Lakeside B were forced to work hard to gain a 7-3 win over club counterparts Lakeside D. Andy Richards remained unbeaten on the night, although he was pushed all the way in a tight five-set encounter with the luckless Mike Gleeson. Gleeson also lost in five sets to Ken Smith, who won twice for Lakeside B, along with Andy East. However, Trevor Oliver performed superbly for Lakeside D, to condemn both East and Smith to defeat, albeit 13-11 in the fifth against East. Oliver combined excellently with Julie Taylor to complete a straight sets doubles win over Richards and Smith.

Lakeside C earned a 6-4 win over Tewkesbury A thanks to braces for Graham Chandler, Paul Singh and Chris White. Rob Amphlett won twice for Tewkesbury A and Alan Cook won once as no player remained unbeaten on the night. Amphlett teamed up with Mike Tyrrell to win the doubles in five sets, but it was to no avail as Tewkesbury A were condemned to their second straight defeat.

Winchcombe Wizards continued their good start to the season with an impressive 7-3 win against Cheltenham C. Keith Ferguson, Chris Lane and Stewart Ratcliffe all won twice to set the Wizards on their way. Anand Keshav offered stubborn resistance, winning twice, and Christine Williams picked up an impressive four-set win over Ferguson. In a tight doubles contest, Ferguson and Lane edged to a five-set victory over Keshav and Dave Green, winning 11-13, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4.

Winchcombe Warriors scraped to a 6-4 win over Cleeve Saracens B. Mike Vick was the performer of the night, winning all three of his matches, including a nail-biting five-set win against Mark Nally. Richard Bishop won twice and Ray Griffiths chipped in with one win. Dave Foulser arguably completed the feat of the night, however, condemning Bishop to a straight sets defeat. Nally combined well with Tony Iles to defeat Griffiths and Vick in four sets and achieve a very respectable result indeed.

Cheltenham D completed a comfortable 7-3 win against Tewkesbury B. Chris James was in sensational form, winning all three of his matches in straight sets. Matt Mulcahy won twice, including an epic five-setter with Simon Lockley, eventually prevailing 11-9, 11-13, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8. Dave Watson was the pick of the Tewkesbury B players, condemning both Mulcahy and Alan Harvey to straight sets defeats. John Teare also picked up an excellent straight sets win over Harvey. James and Mulcahy completed the win with a four-set victory in the doubles.

Division Three
B Team Win Tewkesbury Derby
At this early stage, a young Cheltenham F side narrowly head the league table. Mike Brook and Zac France scored maximums against Cheltenham G to help them to a 7-3 win. For the G side, Simon James, Ryan Godwin and Mike Robertson each recorded one victory.

Pre-season favourites Tirley Tigers were given a fright by Old Saracens, who pushed them all the way in a 5-5 draw. Pete Humble was Tirley’s lynchpin, winning all three of his sets, whilst John Adcock and Pete McGeough won two each for the Saracens.

Having started the season with a 0-10 defeat, Civil Service B reversed matters against Cheltenham H, winning by the same score.

Tiffany Hopton’s experience was a key factor in Cleeve Eagles 8-2 win over Cheltenham E as she secured three wins in her first outing, supported by Mick Holder and Derek Brown who each won two. The Cheltenham side’s points came from James Bird.
