Division Two
Nally Rallies Another
Maximum
Saracens C overcame Tirley Tigers
8-2 thanks to a maximum from Mark Nally. Niall Pawsey and Tony Iles chipped in
with a brace each. Pete Humble and Elaine Marshall, picking up her first win of
the season, both won once for Tirley.
Tewkesbury A inflicted a 6-4 defeat on high-flying Saracens B, thanks to a maximum from Rob Amphlett. He had a very exciting game with Mike Dodwell, winning 12-10 in the fifth, having been two sets to one down. Dodwell won twice for Saracens, but Alan Cook also won twice for Tewkesbury, playing up from Division Three.
Cheltenham D drew 5-5 with two-man Saracens C. Both Niall Pawsey and Neil Penny won twice for Saracens, whilst Alan Harvey and Chris James picked up one win each for Cheltenham.
Newlands Park C beat Tirley Tigers 7-3, despite being able to only field two players. Chris White and Barrie Pope both claimed maximums to assure the victory, although White was pushed all the way in a tense fifth game by the battling Janie Kirby.
Saracens B entertained Cheltenham C and were well beaten 8-2, although the matches were much closer than the scoreline suggests. The result may seem one-sided, but six of the matches were settled in the fifth set on an evening that terminated at approximately 11 p.m. Jon Gaskill and Simon Pratten both earned maximums for Cheltenham, although both were extended to the fifth game on two of their three matches. Indeed, this was the closest challenge yet to Gaskill’s undefeated record in this division, with Mike Dodwell pushing him all the way to 14-12 in the fifth. For Saracens, Dodwell and Ross Greening worked hard to win a match apiece and both were in five games against the unfortunate Anand Keshav. However, they could not increase Saracens scoreline in the doubles so had to settle for their two solitary wins.
Tewkesbury A picked up a 6-4 away win against an under-strength CCS A. Rob Amphlett secured a maximum for Tewkesbury, but Dave Hart played well for CCS A, winning twice.
Saracens C enjoyed a comprehensive and impressive 7-3 victory over Newlands Park D. Mark Nally led the way, continuing his rich vein of form, claiming yet another maximum. He was well supported by Tony Iles who won twice. Chris Ball picked up two wins for Newlands Park D, but he and Mike Gleeson could not prevent Iles and Nally winning the doubles in five sets.
Tewkesbury A claimed their first whitewash of the season, with a 10-0 win against Tirley Tigers. Maximums for Rob Amphlett, John Goodchild and Mike Tyrrell set up the win, completed by a four set win in the doubles for Amphlett and Tyrrell over Janie Kirby and Elaine Evans.
Table-topping Cheltenham C were forced to work really hard in their 8-2 win over CCS A. Anand Keshav claimed a maximum and Dave Green and Nick Scott chipped in with braces. Scott, in particular, was made to work hard in all his matches, and Jon Nixon will consider himself unlucky to have lost to him 11-9 in the fifth. Dave Hart impressively won twice for CCS A. The doubles was a very close affair, with Green and Kershav eventually prevailing against the Hart and Nixon combination, by the score line 10-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9.
The match between Saracens D and Cheltenham D has been declared void due to a mix up with rescheduled match dates.
