Rudford Take Top Spot
Champions
Smiths A were knocked off the division one top spot after suffering
their first defeat for some time. The father and son combination of Dave
and Michael Harvey proved too good on the night, and both had maximums in
Cheltenham A's 6-4 win.
Rudford took
advantage of Smiths slip up and hammered a struggling but game
Cheltenham B 10-0 to move top of the division. This win keeps their
100% record intact and gave maximums to Dave Hope, Aled Howell and
Alan Smith.
Saracens A continued their unbeaten start with an impressive 7-3 win over
Cirencester. Natasha Hurd, playing her first match for
Saracens, took all her
singles and was well supported with two from Brian McRandal. Gordon Shaw had an
excellent win over McRandal for Cirencester, but was defeated in five by a top
class performance from Bob Trimble.
After gaining their first win last week, Smiths C came down to Earth with a bump, losing 10-0 to Chelsea B.S. Bill Dawe, Dave Metcalfe and Simon Moysey all had maximums.

Division Two
Wizards Still Flying
Winchcombe Wizards continued their dominance of Division Two with an
emphatic 9-1 victory against Cheltenham F. Keith Ferguson
and Nick Davidson were unbeaten on the night, although Davidson,
the division’s only undefeated player, was made to sweat by the in form
Matt Mulcahy. Their topsy-turvy encounter saw Davidson come out
on top 10-12, 9-11, 11-9, 14-12, 11-7. Alan Harvey prevented a
whitewash by overcoming Stewart Ratcliffe 11-9 in the fifth.
Cheltenham D kept up the pressure at the top of the table with a convincing 9-1 win against struggling Tirley Tigers. Anand Kershav and John Gaskell were untroubled by their opponents, winning each of their games comfortably in straight sets. Mike Fry claimed a brace for Cheltenham, although Elaine Evans claimed Tirley’s solitary point with a good five-set win over him.
Tewkesbury A completed a hard-fought 7-3 victory against CCS A. Rob Amphlett claimed yet another maximum for Tewkesbury, although he was hard pushed by Dave Hart. Hart was unlucky in his other two encounters against John Goodchild, losing 12-10 in the fifth, and against Mike Tyrrell. Indeed, Goodchild and Tyrrell claimed braces, losing only to Steve Murton. Murton and Hart combined well to defeat Amphlett and Tyrrell in an important doubles contest.
Smiths D were in excellent form against Cheltenham E as they claimed a very good 8-2 victory. Chris Ball was the pick of the players, claiming an easy maximum. Mike Gleeson and Dave Mackman claimed braces for Smiths D, losing just one match each, to Christine Williams and Siben Li respectively. Andy Dyke was again unlucky for Cheltenham E, losing 11-9 in the fifth to Gleeson. The doubles was a tight affair: Ball and Mackman scraped home in a five-set thriller having been 2-1 down.
Saracens D produced the performance of the week with a stunning 8-2 win over club rivals Saracens B. Tony Iles and Mark Nally were in terrific form, each winning all three of their games. They both had particularly close games with Mike Dodwell, and he will consider himself very unlucky to have lost both, particularly against Iles against whom he was 2-1 up, losing the fourth and fifth sets 11-9. Neil Penny picked up a further win for the D team, but lost to Dodwell and Terry Sims.

Eagles Climb To Top
Spurred on by Rob
Browning’s maximum, Civil Service B matched Saracens
E in a 5-5- draw. There were only two five game sets, Alan Thomas
losing out to John Adcock, but getting the better of Sheila
Matthews. Civil Service snatched the doubles in four games
to level matters up.
Winchcombe Eagles climbed to the top of the table with a convincing 10-0 win over Cheltenham M. Tiffany Hopton, Roland Holder and Derek Brown all claimed maximums to register the win.
