Cheltenham D Dominate
Cheltenham D picked up a crucial 6-4 win over
Winchcombe Warriors – and it was no surprise that their return to
winning ways coincided with Chris James’s return to the team. However, it was
the Warriors Richard Bishop who claimed a maximum, but braces for James and Alan
Harvey, as well as a win for Matt Mulcahy, set up the win. Harvey and Mulcahy
claimed the match for Cheltenham with an impressive five-set win over Bishop and
Graham Fisher in the doubles, winning 11-9, 11-6, 12-14, 9-11, 11-8.
Cheltenham D then made it two wins in a row with a good away win over CCS A. James picked up a maximum, although he was pushed very close having been 2-0 down against Jon Nixon, and Harvey and Mulcahy both won twice. Dave Hart was CCS A’s most impressive player, winning twice, and then combining with Nixon to send Harvey and Mulcahy to a five-set doubles defeat, winning 5-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 14-12.
Winchcombe Warriors followed up their defeat at the hands of Cheltenham D with a 6-4 win over Tewkesbury A, despite only fielding two players. Maximums for Bishop and Mike Vick assured the win. Alan Cook and Mike Tyrrell condemned Bishop to his second five-set doubles defeat in a week, winning 12-10, 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9.
Tewkesbury B were only able to field two players in a fiery match with table-toppers Winchcombe Wizards. Nick Davidson and Stewart Ratcliffe both claimed maximums, whilst Jacqui Carver won once, although she had to come back from 2-1 down against Michael Maxwell. Dave Watson picked up Tewkesbury B’s only win with a four-set victory over Carver.
Cheltenham C picked up an impressive 8-2 win away to Lakeside D. A maximum for Anand Keshav and braces for Dave Green and Christine Williams assured the victory. Julie Taylor was in excellent form for Lakeside D, defeating both Green and Williams in four sets. Mike Gleeson will also consider himself unlucky, having played very well against Keshav, and losing to both Green and Williams in close five-set encounters. Green and Keshav won an extremely tight doubles contest in four sets by the scoreline of 11-8, 12-10, 13-15, 12-10.
Lakeside C were victorious by a scoreline of 6-4 against Cleeve Saracens A. Chris White was in imperious form, claiming a maximum, and Barrie Pope won twice. Graham Chandler also chipped in with one win. A win each for Mike Dodwell, Ross Greening and Terry Sims, along with a straight sets victory for Dodwell and Greening in the doubles, was how Cleeve Saracens A claimed their points.
Lakeside B raced to a 9-1 win over Cleeve Saracens B. Maximums for Graham Chandler (playing up) and Andy East, and a brace for Andy Richards, did the damage. Tony Iles picked up an excellent win over Richards 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 13-11, to claim Cleeve Saracens B’s solitary point. Chandler and Richards were comfortable winners in the doubles.

Old But Not Out -
Saracens Claim A Maximum
Cheltenham E showed little seasonal goodwill to
Cheltenham F, with both James Bird and Carey Maisey winning all of
their sets in an 8-2 victory.
The same scoreline provided Tirley Tigers with another win, this time at the expense of Cheltenham G. Elaine Evans and Pete Humble were comfortable winners of their respective singles, whilst for the Cheltenham side, Ryan Godwin beat Janie Kirby, and then teamed up with Mike Robertson to inflict Tirley’s first doubles defeat of the season.
Old Saracens collected a comfortable 10-0 win over Cheltenham H to maintain their promotion push, dropping only two games in the process.
