Harveys' Strong Start
We have now completed three weeks of the Division 1 season and already a trend is being seen with two of the Cheltenham TTC clubs (B and A) leading the table by a significant margin so early in the season. These two teams are likely to be contesting the title at the end of the season, however, Smiths A should not be ruled out just yet as they are on maximum points with a game in hand.
Cheltenham B comprising of
the Harvey family are always going to be difficult to beat, but Dave
and Michael are looking particularly match sharp and Robert
is improving with every match that he plays. Dave Harvey very
recently won the Veterans Clare Pengelly
Tournament and beat Darren Griffin in the Semi
Final, highlighting just how well that he is playing at the moment - not bad
for a 58 year old! It is good to see an increase in the amount of juniors
playing in Division 1 all of whom are getting more difficult to beat as each
week goes by. I am sure a lot of senior players will be recording a loss
against some of the vastly improving juniors. Milan Dragojlovic appears
to be playing particularly well and will be a serious force to contend with
for the more experienced players, having already taken the scalp of Guy
Greening and recording an easy maximum against the
Winchcombe Cavaliers.
Winchcombe Cavaliers
played well against Saracens A and were slightly
unlucky to come away with only three points. Luke Moffat played
particularly well, taking a game off Brian McRandal and then going
on to beat both the experienced players of Pete Wood and Bob
Trimble for a fine two points, Darrel Willshire contributed a
point by beating Pete Wood. The Cheltenham B
side comprising of the Harvey family should be in the title race at
the end of the season, eldest son Michael in his last year as a
junior is playing very well and was unlucky to lose to Bill Dawe
15-13 in the deciding game and youngest son Robert is improving
every game. Their father Dave spearheads the team and is unlikely
to drop many games throughout the season.

Penny Drops In Saracens' Derby
Saracens C overcame their
under-strength club counterparts Saracens D by a
score line of 7-3. Mike Dodwell won both of his matches for the
C team, although he was pushed all the way by the
in-form Neil Penny, eventually winning 12-10 in the fifth.
Penny did win twice for the D team,
overcoming Terry Sims in five sets and Ross Greening in
four. He then combined well with Tony Iles to win the doubles, but
ultimately his excellent individual performance wasn’t enough to win the
match for Saracens D.
Winchcombe Warriors completed a solid 7-3 victory
over Cheltenham D. Newcomer Jan De Wet
claimed an easy maximum and he was well supported by Mike Vick who
also won three games. Vick, however, was pushed all the way by
Alan Harvey, eventually winning 11-9 in the fifth having been two sets
to one down. Harvey and Matt Mulcahy both dispatched
Dave MacIntosh with relative ease and then combined well to win their
second successive doubles match in straight sets.
Smiths D scrambled to a
hard-fought 6-4 win over CCS A, although it was
David Hart of CCS A who was the pick of
the players. His maximum, including a gruelling five-set win over Chris
Ball, helped CCS A to within touching
distance of victory. However, braces of wins for Ball and Mike
Gleeson, along with a further point from Julie Taylor, put
Smiths in control. Ball and Gleeson
then combined superbly to see off the threat of defeat in the doubles by
winning 11-3, 11-9, 11-9 against Hart and Jon Nixon.
Tewkesbury B battled away against title-favourites
Smiths C and picked up some useful points along
the way. Smiths’ Chris White was the pick
of the players, claiming an impressive maximum, although he was pushed all
the way by Tom Urbanski, eventually winning 11-9, 10-12, 8-11,
11-3, 13-11. Graham Chandler and Paul Singh picked up
braces for Smiths although they were both defeated
by the excellence of the in-form Alan Cook. Cook combined well with
Ali Lockley in the doubles and were unlucky to lose a tight
five-set contest.
A highly impressive maximum from Wayne Lippett
helped Tewkesbury B to victory in the battle of
the newly-promoted teams in Division Two. His three wins, along with a brace
for Alan Cook and a further win from Ali Lockley, ensured
that
Saracens C edged to a 6-4 win
over Smiths D in a highly entertaining and closely
fought encounter. No player on the night was able to finish unbeaten:
Mike Dodwell and Dennis Wadley won twice each for
Saracens, whilst Mike Gleeson and Chris Ball
did likewise for Smiths. Saracens
just managed to keep their noses in front leading to the doubles and the
Dodwell/Wadley combination was just too strong for Ball and
Julie Taylor, enabling Saracens to finish
the evening victorious.
Tewkesbury A belatedly got their season off to a good start with a 7-3 win over an under-strength CCS A. Rob Amphlett won both of his matches, albeit 12-10 in the fifth set against the highly impressive Dave Hart. Simon Lockley chipped in with a solid victory over Steve Murton whilst Mike Tyrrell completed a convincing win over Hart. Conversely, Murton overcame Tyrrell whilst Hart crushed Lockley. The doubles was an exciting affair with Hart and Murton emerging victorious by the score line of 11-9 in the fifth set against the Amphlett/Tyrrell combination.
