Cirencester dismount the Cavaliers
Cheltenham A
just managed to edge to a 6-4 victory on the doubles to win the derby match
against their B side in division one of the Cheltenham table
tennis league. Dave Harvey was the only unbeaten player and was well
supported with two from his son Michael. Sam White was the B
sides top performer with wins over Michael and Robert Harvey.
Dominic Wynn-Sands, back playing in Cheltenham after a few years absence,
turned out for the B side and managed to win one set.
Maximums for Dave Adamson and Dave Lloyd helped Cirencester to a comfortable 9-1 win over Winchcombe Cavaliers. Graham Brown showed good form to beat Rob Willsher for the Cavaliers solitary point.
Smiths C are still searching for that elusive first point, and Jonathon Marlow nearly got it, just losing 11-8 in the fifth against Suzy Robinson. Suzy then went on to complete her maximum, as did Roy Fowler and Pete Wood as Saracen A ran out 10-0 winners.
Smiths B fared no better as they also lost 10-0 to Cheltenham C, with maximums coming from Harry and Lawrence Shahlaei and Paul Perks. Only Ken Smith troubled them, taking both Lawrence and Paul to the fifth set.
Amazingly, both Rudford and Chelsea could only field two players each. This spoiled what should have been a highly competitive match between two of the top teams in the division. Rudford ran out 7-2 winners to maintain their 100% start.

Division Two
Amphletts' fine form isn't enough to stop Cheltenham D
Cheltenham D
remain unbeaten following a good 6-4 win over Tewkesbury A.
However, it was a Tewkesbury player, Rob Amphlett, who
remained unbeaten on the night as he continued to prove his value to last
season’s Division Three Winners. He overcame Dave Green and John
Gaskell in entertaining encounters, and defeated Mike Fry 13-11
in the fifth set after a titanic struggle. Gaskell, Fry and
Green were all too strong for Tewkesbury’s other players
Simon Lockley and John Goodchild, although Goodchild
was 2 sets up against Fry before he came back. Amphlett teamed
up with Lockley to win an excellent doubles contest.
Cheltenham E earned a 7-3 victory against an under-strength Saracens D team. Christine Williams and Siben Li won both of their matches as Saracens only fielded two players. Jamie Makepiece was unlucky to lose to both Neil Penny and Mike Barwick in tight five-set games. Penny and Barwick combined to win a convincing doubles.
Smiths D recorded their first win of the season as they overcame Saracens C 7-3 thanks to some excellent play from their entire team. Julie Taylor was in commanding form, claiming a maximum and she was rarely troubled. She was well supported by Dave Mackman and Mike Gleeson who grabbed two wins apiece. Tony Walsh claimed a five-set victory over Gleeson whilst Martin Cosnette comfortably outplayed Mackman to earn Saracens’ points.
Winchcombe Warriors were emphatic 10-0 winners against Tirley Tigers. Richard Bishop, John Teare and Dick Prior all claimed maximums as Tirley offered little resistance. Janie Kirby almost took one point Tirley’s way, taking Dick Prior to five sets in a close encounter. Bishop and Prior completed a convincing doubles victory.
Saracens B and Cheltenham F played out an entertaining 5-5 draw. Mike Dodwell remained unbeaten for Saracens, although he was pushed all the way by Matt Mulcahy, winning 11-9 in the fifth. Alan Harvey was the pick of the Cheltenham players, winning twice, and he combined with Mulcahy to take the doubles 11-8 in the fifth to earn a draw.

Three
Eagles still flying high
A young Cheltenham H
side kept up their good start to the season with a comfortable 10-0 win over
their N team. Cheltenham N suffered a similar
fate against Winchcombe Eagles who were simply too strong for
them. Tiffany Hopton, Derek Brown and Mike Holder all registered maximums to
comfortably win 10-0.
Saracens E continued their run of wins to beat the improving Cheltenham G team 9-1. For Cheltenham G, Chris Foster played well and was unlucky not to secure more than a single win.
Tewkesbury B maintained their unbeaten record at the expense of Civil Service B who suffered their first defeat of the season. Both Tom Urbanski and Pete Newdeck scored maximums for the Tewkesbury side.
The meeting of two of the junior Cheltenham sides produced a 7-3 win for the L team over the J side. Tom Morrison starred for L, winning all three of his sets, but all six players secured at least one win each.
