A Week Of Whitewashes
Cheltenham 'A' played
Winchcombe Cavaliers in
a match that surprisingly saw none of the Harvey family achieving a maximum.
Even more surprising perhaps is that young Robert Harvey was the closest to a
maximum, but he narrowly lost deuce in the deciding set to Tristan Gretton after
being two match points up. Tristan Gretton deserves a mention for his two wins
over the Harvey boys, losing only to their father Dave. The surprise of the
evening was a great win for Choi Sze To over Dave Harvey in four sets, very well
done Choi! Tristan's two wins combined with Choi's were the only points for the
Cavaliers who lost by seven games to three.
Cheltenham 'B' were too strong for Cirencester 'A' as they dealt out a 10-0 whitewash. Cirencester 'A', represented by Mike Kiff, Howard Williams and Rob Willsher were simply too strong for Cheltenham players, Simon Pratten, Dominic James and Jon Gaskell.
Winchcombe Roamers dealt another whitewash to Lakeside 'A'. The Lakesider's Pete Wood, Roy Fowler and Rich Moores proved little resistance against Winchcombe's Nick Mytton, Doug Payne and Matt Hartwell.
Chelsea Building Society played Cheltenham 'A' in a match that ended in yet another whitewash in a week of whitewashes for the Chelsea. This was particularly surprising as the slender and athletic Chelsea team represented by Guy Greening, Dave Metcalfe and Dominic Wynn-Sands caught the Cheltenham players in their fat zones time and time again, but on each occasion the Cheltenham players grovelled the ball back into play and the Chelsea were unable to capitalise. Cheltenham were represented by Dave and Mike Harvey and Chris Hewitt. The particularly athletic Dave Metcalfe played very well against Mike Harvey moving him around the table so much that Mike's hair was constantly getting in his eyes. However, despite visual impairment, Mike took a slap at a few balls and managed to scrape through winning deuce in each of the three games.

Ross Is The Boss At
Lakeside
Cheltenham C eased to an 8-2 win over CCS A.
Anand Keshav was the outstanding player, winning each of his matches in straight
sets. His strong attacking game left everyone in his wake. Dave Green and Chris
Williams chipped in with two wins each. Dave Hart was CCS A’s main resistance,
winning their two points, including squeezing home in a nailbiting five-set win
over Green, by the scoreline 9-11, 14-12, 11-5, 7-11, 16-14. Steve Murton said,
“It was the best and tightest match. However, I lost count of the nets and edges
and fluffed services throughout the entire evening!”
Lakeside B worked very hard to claim a 9-1 win over club rivals Lakeside C thanks to maximums from Andy East and Andy Richards and a brace from Ken Smith. Lakeside C’s solitary point of the evening was taken by Paul Singh who enjoyed a good four-set win over Smith. However, the match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. Smith’s two wins, against Graham Chandler and Barrie Pope, were claimed 11-8 in the fifth set, and the same two players lost in a deciding fifth set against East. Richards was the only player who looked reasonably comfortable, winning his three games in straight sets. The doubles was also a tight affair, with East and Richards defeating the combination of Chandler and Pope 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7.
Winchcombe Warriors completed a 7-3 win over Tewkesbury B despite only fielding two players. Richard Bishop and Mike Vick both claimed maximums, although there were some very close matches along the way. Vick had to come back from 2-1 down to defeat Dave Watson and he also required five sets to see off John Teare. Bishop also went on to win having been 2-1 down against Michael Maxwell, eventually prevailing 4-11, 11-7, 3-11, 11-9, 11-9. The doubles were also extremely close, with Bishop and Vick defeating Maxwell and Teare 16-14, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10. It proved to be a winless evening for Tewkesbury B, although they can consider themselves rather unfortunate to have gone away with nothing (apart from the three points gifted by virtue of only having to play two players).
Cleeve Saracens B stormed to an 8-2 win over Tewkesbury A. A maximum for Dave Foulser and braces from Tony Iles and Neil Penny did the damage. Tewkesbury A’s points came via straight sets wins for Ali Lockley over Penny and Mike Tyrrell over Iles.
Cleeve Saracens A beat Lakeside D by a comfortable 9-1 margin. Although the result may seem resounding, the fact that nearly half the matches were won in the fifth game shows that it was far from comfortable. Ross Greening was in fine form for Cleeve Saracens A, as he gained his first maximum of the season, which included an outstanding victory over the resolute Mike Gleeson. He was ably assisted by Mike Dodwell, who also claimed a maximum, and Terry Sims who chipped in with two wins. Gleeson claimed Lakeside D’s only point in a straight sets win over Sims. To wrap up the evening’s successes, Dodwell and Greening edged the doubles in the fifth and final game.
Winchcombe Wizards raced to a 9-1 win over Cheltenham D, thanks to maximums from Nick Davidson and Keith Ferguson, and a brace from Jacqui Carver. Ferguson won his three matches comfortably in straight sets. Matt Mulcahy picked up a good four-set win over Carver for Cheltenham D.

Servicemen
The top two sides each
gained 8-2 successes this week. Pete Humble’s three wins led
Tirley Tigers to victory against
Cheltenham F, for whom Zac France won two,
including a five game tussle against Janie Kirby which he won 12-10 in the last.
Old Saracen’s victory over Civil Service B followed a similar pattern, with Pete McGeough being their sole player to gain a maximum and Rob Browning picking up the two points for Civil Service.
Cleeve Eagle’s experience saw them through against newcomers Cheltenham H, who played with enthusiasm but were unable to take a game.
