All Square In Cav's Vs. Cheltenham Match
Smiths A played Chelsea Building Society A this week in a good spirited match that saw Chelsea put a slight dent in Smiths race to the title. Bill Dawe for Chelsea took a reasonably untroubled maximum, although he was pushed to a fourth game by Nick Mytton. Chelsea's Guy Greening who is still recovering from a back injury, beat Mark Billsborrow and took Nick Mytton all the way, losing narrowly in the fifth. He had little hope however against Dave White who won comfortably. Chelsea's Simon Moysey,  although playing well, was comfortably beaten in all of his games. Chelsea eventually ran out 6-4 winners. This match was played in good spirits although it got off to a slow start as Mark Billsborrow of Smiths spotted some muck on Bill Dawe's shorts, this was eventually found to be a Manchester United supports badge. Mark complained throughout his game with Bill that he was losing because he could see two hairs on Bill's head. The Chelsea team then advised Mark to go and get his eyes tested!

[Comment: Guy Greening due to his back injury is retiring for the rest of the season but hopes to make a comeback when his injury is 100% recovered, hopefully in time for the Cheltenham tournament.]

Cheltenham C played Winchcombe Cavaliers in a game that ended in a fairly predictable draw with all players contributing for each team. Grahame Browne of the Cavaliers was the star of the evening taking a reasonably comfortable maximum and was well supported by his team mates Stuart Green and Jan De Wet (who was playing up from Division 2) who contributed one each to secure the draw. John Gaskell of Cheltenham C won two, supported by Anand Kerr and Chris Williams who won one each. Anand and John then combined to win doubles.

Saracens A entertained a slightly weakened Cheltenham A this week who may have paid the price in the title race as they suffered a narrow defeat. Brian McRandal and Roy Fowler of Saracens each won a maximum whilst Richard Moore looked to have been unlucky but certainly getting his moneys worth losing all of his games, two of which were deuce in the fifth! The Cheltenham A players comprising Paul Perks, Dan Kolesnik and Rob Harvey (Playing up from Cheltenham B) each contributed one win, Paul and Dan then combined to win the doubles and take the four points for Cheltenham A.

The game between Smiths B and Saracens B was postponed.

Cheltenham A 4 Saracens A 6 B. McRandal, R. Fowler

Division Two
Servicemen Slaughter Saracens
Cheltenham D overcame an under-strength Saracens D by a comfortable margin of 8-2. Matt Mulcahy and Alan Harvey won both of their matches, whilst Richard Gummow chipped in with a good win over Tony Iles 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 12-10. Cheltenham’s run of winning doubles matches finally came to an end as Iles and Niall Pawsey won in five close sets.

Smiths D were made to work hard for a 6-4 win over Tewkesbury B. Chris Ball was on top form, claiming a maximum, whilst Mike Gleeson chipped in with two. Perhaps the match of the night saw Mike Maxwell defeat Gleeson 11-9 in the fifth set to help him towards a brace of wins. Tewkesbury fought hard for the draw, but ultimately lost in the fifth set of a tight doubles contest.

CCS A raced to a 9-1 win over Saracens E. Maximums for Dave Hart and Steve Murton, and a brace for Jon Nixon ensured that CCS A dominated the match. Saracens only point was secured by Pete McGeough, although Murton had to work hard to come back from two sets down to beat him 11-9 in the fifth.

Cheltenham D 8 Saracens D 2 A Harvey, M Mulcahy
Tewkesbury B 4 Smiths D 6 C. Ball
CCS A 9 Saracens E 1 D. Hart, S. Murton

Division Three
Bird Flies But G Men Still Lose Treble
Winchcombe Eagles tasted both defeat and success in recent matches. Cheltenham H could only field two players against them, enabling Eagles to notch up a 9-1 win. They found promotion seeking Tirley Tigers a different matter, and the form book showed through as Tirley recorded a 7-3 win, with Pete Humble and Lesley Dewick gaining maximums.

Title contenders Saracens F returned to form this week with a 9-1 win over Cheltenham G. Cheltenham’s only resistance came from James Bird who won Dave Foulser in 5. Saracens' Dave Cosnette and Tony Walsh once again combined in the doubles and had little trouble despatching their opponents.

Cheltenham F continued their current run of good results with a 9-1 win over Cheltenham G. Karl Foster and Chris James both recorded maximums, including victories over James Bird. James just held off Matt Williams to secure his team’s single point.

Cheltenham G lost narrowly 6-4 to Cheltenham J, and again it was James Bird who provided the main resistance, but with each of the Cheltenham J side recording victories, their all round team performance gave them the edge.

Cheltenham G 1 Cheltenham F 9 K. Foster, C. James
Cheltenham G 1 Saracens F 9 D. Cosnette, T. Walsh
Cheltenham G 4 Cheltenham J 6 J. Bird
Winchcombe Eagles 3 Tirley Tigers 7 P. Humble, L. Dewick
Cheltenham H 1 Winchcombe Eagles 9
