Rudford Fail To Take Advantage
A top game between
Champions Smiths A and Cheltenham A ended all
square, with Smiths holding off defeat with a win in the doubles.
Dave Harvey won his customary three, with son, Michael, chipping
in with two convincing wins over Doug Payne and winning in the fifth set
against Nick Mytton. Smiths Matt Hartwell proved a little
more difficult however, as he won in the fifth set.
Rudford, currently placed second in the division, failed to take advantage of their closest rivals draw as they could only field a two man team against Cheltenham B, who held them to a 5-5 draw. Back playing his first game for quite some time, Roy Morley had a good win over Aled Howell, but lost to Alan Smith. Milan Dragojlovic beat Smith, but lost to Howell.
A Brian McRandal maximum,
plus a win in the doubles with Tony Stead steered Saracens A
to a 6-4 win against Cirencester. Dave Adamson was also in
good form for Cirencester, taking McRandal close, and
beating Tony Stead and Pete Wood with some ferocious forehand
drives.
Darren Griffin won his usual three games for Rudford
against Winchcombe Cavaliers, as his team ran out 7-3 winners.
However, the man of the match award must go to Nick Davidson, playing up
from division two, who beat both Alan Smith and Lawrence Symonds.
The division title is still wide open at we head towards the last few games of the season. Only 16 points divide the top four teams. At this stage last season Smiths A were untouchable as they led by more than 40 points.

Division Two
Mixed Results For Smiths D
Two matches in the space
of a week brought mixed results for Smiths D. Chris Ball
and Mike Gleeson were both in outstanding form as they claimed
maximums against high-flying Saracens B in a 6-4 win.
Gleeson, however, was pushed all the way in two of his matches, winning
in the fifth set on both occasions to overcome Terry Sims 11-9 and
Ross Greening 14-12. Ball had a similarly close encounter with
Mike Dodwell, eventually winning 10-12, 14-12, 14-12, 6-11, 13-11.
Dodwell, Greening and Sims all claimed one win each for
Saracens, and Dodwell’s partnership with Greening was too
strong for the Smiths pairing of Ball and Dave
Mackman in the doubles.
The following day saw a morale boosting 7-3 victory for Cheltenham E over Smiths D. Mike Gleeson continued his good form for Smiths with two pleasing wins, however it was Christine Williams of Cheltenham who turned in the star performance. Her three good wins, coupled with an excellent brace from Siben Li, set Cheltenham on the way to victory. Andy Dyke chipped in with a straight sets win over Dave Mackman and then combined with Williams to take the doubles in four close sets.
Cheltenham D completed an emphatic 10-0 victory over Tirley Tigers thanks to maximums from Mike Fry, John Gaskell and Dave Green. The Cheltenham team almost won every match in straight sets. Indeed, only two matches went to four sets in the whole evening: Green conceding one set to Pete Humble in singles and then, when combining with Gaskell, losing the opening set in the doubles to Humble and Elaine Evans. Tirley must take consolation in the knowledge that they are not the only team to have been defeated in such a manner this season.
Saracens C completed an excellent 6-4 victory over Winchcombe Warriors, despite the superb form of Richard Bishop. Bishop claimed yet another maximum for the Warriors, although he was pushed all the way by Martin Cosnette to a five set win, having been 2-0 down. Martin, his brother Dave and Tony Walsh all picked up two convincing wins each against Dick Prior and Mike Vick. However, Bishop and Vick were far too strong for the Cosnette brothers in the doubles, winning in straight sets.
Tewkesbury A romped to a highly satisfying 8-2 win over CCS A. Rob Amphlett and Mike Tyrrell both claimed excellent maximums. Tyrrell’s maximum included a fight back from 2-0 down to defeat the in-form David Hart. Simon Lockley picked up his first ever win against Steve Murton, and Amphlett and Tyrrell combined to take the doubles in straight sets.

Saracens Roar Against Servicemen
Cheltenham L
secured a useful 10-0 win over Cheltenham H and now join them
with the same points total. Several of the sets went to five games, but in
each of them the home side took quick advantage in the final game to win
through.
Mid-table sides Tewkesbury C and Cheltenham J fought out a 5-5 draw. Alan Cook won all three for Tewkesbury, whilst Andy Smith, John Terry and James Bird all chipped in with wins for the Cheltenham side.
Tewkesbury B powered to a 10-0 victory over Cheltenham K, and Winchcombe Eagles beat Cheltenham M by the same score.
Saracens E kept their championship hopes on line with a 9-1 victory over CCS B, but met with some stiff resistance. High flying Pete McGeough was taken to five games by Geoff Wilson, and Alan Thomas almost overcame Tony Childs, eventually losing 13-11, 4-11, 10-12,11-6,9-11. Geoff Foster beat Tony Childs to secure the one point for Civil Service.
