Saracens Dominate
Warriors
Cirencester
played Newlands Park this week in a match
that saw David Adamson protecting his average by dropping out. Cirencester
represented by Gordon Shaw, Howard Williams and Mike Kiff were soundly beaten by
Newlands. However, Howard Williams in his first season back after a lay off,
recorded two wins over Doug Payne and the excellent scalp of Matt Hartwell.
Howard then combined with Mike Kiff to take the extra point, but lost the match
3-7. Nick Mytton, despite his advancing years enjoyed a fairly comfortable
maximum, supported by team mate Doug Payne and the youngster Matt Hartwell
who each won two.

Cheltenham D Score Maximum
Points
Tewkesbury A
and Newlands Park C played out an
entertaining draw on a very late mop fair night in Tewkesbury. Rob Amphlett was
in fine form, winning his three games comfortably. Paul Singh and Chris White
both won twice for Newlands Park, whilst John Goodchild picked up an excellent
win over Barrie Pope for Tewkesbury. Simon Lockley’s steady victory over White
sent Tewkesbury leading into the doubles. In a tight and exciting match,
Newlands Park emerged victorious after five sets to secure a draw.
Saracens B also played out a draw against Newlands Park D in a very closely fought match. Five of the games were decided in the fifth set as no player was able to dominate on the night. With neither side having a player able to gain a maximum due to the variety of styles, the most unlucky player was Julie Taylor who came close to winning on three occasions but went home empty handed. Braces for Mike Dodwell, Terry Sims, Chris Ball and Mike Gleeson set up a tense doubles finale. The possibility of a Saracens B win or a Newlands Park D draw was finally settled as Ball and Gleeson combined for Newlands Park to overcome the Dodwell and Sims pairing in five sets to earn a draw.
Cheltenham D pulled off a sensational 10-0 drubbing of CCS A. They are certain to be rubbing their eyes in happy disbelief as this normally tight fixture turned into a rout with Cheltenham D in over-drive. Although some games went close, Cheltenham always had the edge. Maximums for Alan Harvey, Chris James and Matt Mulcahy did the damage, although Dave Hart can consider himself unlucky not to win at least one of his two very close matches. Steve Murton was full of praise for his opponents, but declared emphatically, “We’ll be back!”
Cheltenham C ran out 9-1 winners against Saracens C. John Gaskill and Anand Kershav both claimed maximums while Dave Green picked up a brace. Tony Iles will be extremely satisfied with his fine five set win over Green. This was a tough night for Saracens C as Cheltenham C looked comfortable throughout.
Cheltenham D continued their rich vein of form with a 10-0 thumping of Tirley Tigers at home. Alan Harvey, Chris James and Matt Mulcahy all claimed maximums, although Harvey was pushed all the way by Pete Humble, eventually winning 14-12 in the fifth set.
Newlands Park D emerged as 6-4 winners against CCS A, who put in a much improved performance compared to last week’s whitewash at the hands of Cheltenham D. Chris Ball was the player of the evening, claiming a maximum for Newlands Park. However, Dave Hart was also in good form for CCS A and he claimed an excellent brace. It was a brilliant battle when these two came up against each other, and the close score line suggests that the match could have gone either way. Ball claimed his maximum with a 9-11, 11-4, 14-12, 11-13, 11-9 win. Julie Taylor was again unlucky for Newlands Park, losing all three games but again, only just. Mike Gleeson chipped in with a brace for Newlands Park too and then teamed up with Ball in the doubles to secure the victory.
Saracens B beat club counterparts Saracens D 9-1 thanks largely to maximums from Mike Dodwell and Dennis Wadley. Ross Greening claimed a brace with two good wins, but was unable to prevent Martin Cosnette from picking up a vital point for Saracens D. A tight doubles contest saw Dodwell and Wadley emerge victorious over the Cosnette brothers, by a score line of 11-5, 11-4, 13-15, 10-12, 11-8.
Newlands Park B were 9-1 winners against Saracens C. Maximums for Andy East and Andy Richards, along with a brace for Ken Smith, set up the victory. Saracens C’s solitary point came via an excellent performance from Neil Penny, who defeated Smith for the first time this season.
Cheltenham C overcame Newlands Park C 6-4 in a closely contested affair. Anand Kershav was the pick of the players, winning his three games relatively comfortably. Simon Pratten won twice for Cheltenham, but Barrie Pope was in excellent form for Newlands Park C and he also picked up two wins. Graham Chandler and Chris White both defeated Nick Scott in five sets. Kershav and Pratten combined well to win the doubles and ensure victory on the night.

Division Three

Tewkesbury C, but nevertheless battled well to
gain a draw. Geoff Wilson and Alan Thomas each won two, and were also successful
in the doubles.
Tewkesbury B recorded a resounding 8-2 win over Saracens E, with none of the sets lasting more than four games. Three wins each for Alan Cook and Michael Maxwell ensured that Tewkesbury ran out comfortable victors.
Tewkesbury C had Neil Cameron and Wayne Lippett to thank for a 7-3 victory over Cheltenham G, for whom Jonathon Laramy, Ryan Godwin and Tom Parry each won once.
Saracens E suffered their second defeat of the season, losing 6-4 against a strong Civil Service B side. Jeremy Turberville led the way for Civil Service, conceding no games in his three successes. Rob Browning won twice, with Alan Thomas picking up the other point. Saracens consolation was to win a five game doubles.
Winchcombe Eagles were outgunned by a young and improving Cheltenham E. Dominic James led the way for Cheltenham, winning all three of his sets without dropping a game.
Table toppers Tewkesbury B were in good form against Winchcombe Eagles, and ran out 9-1 winners.
