Servicemen Take Flight

CCS A picked up an excellent away win against Saracens D by a score line of 7-3. Phil King was in imperious form for CCS A, winning all three of his matches, and he was well supported by Dave Hart, who won twice, and Steve Murton, who picked up a straight sets win over Tony Iles. Iles, however, must be pleased as he scored an impressive win over Hart. A tight doubles contest went CCS A’s way 11-4, 11-8, 11-13, 10-12, 11-7. They continued their good form the following week, overcoming Smiths D 6-4. Hart claimed a maximum, but Smiths’ Julie Taylor put up sterling opposition, winning two out of her three gruelling five-set encounters. In her only defeat, Taylor had been 2-1 up against Hart, only to lose the final two sets 12-10, 11-8. Chris Ball picked up one win for Smiths, defeating King, whilst Steve Murton will be very impressed with his straight sets win over Ball. Will Elliott picked up his first win of the season for Smiths, overcoming Murton in five sets.

Cheltenham D earned an impressive and totally unexpected 7-3 win over league leaders Winchcombe Warriors. The Warriors were under strength, only fielding two players, but Cheltenham took full advantage, and Matt Mulcahy was particularly impressive, defeating both Mike Vick and Jan De Wet in tight five-set matches. Mulcahy and Alan Harvey continued their impressive run of victories in doubles with a comfortable win over the Winchcombe pair as the match concluded.

Saracens C and Saracens D fought out an entertaining draw in their derby match. Mike Dodwell was in supreme form for the C team, and he claimed a fairly straightforward maximum, despite being pushed to five sets by Mark Nally. Nally and Niall Pawsey won twice each for the D team, and Tony Iles’ win over Ross Greening meant that Saracens D were leading as the doubles was about to start. However, Dodwell and Terry Sims rescued the draw for Saracens C with an outstanding victory over Iles and Nally, 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 6-11, 15-13.

Smiths C whitewashed struggling Tewkesbury B. Maximums for Graham Chandler, Paul Singh and Chris White led them to victory. Alan Cook and Wayne Lippett both offered resistance: this was no pushover. However, it was Smiths who killed off games and ultimately killed off the tie.

Division Three
Mixed Fortunes For Eagles
Cheltenham G were involved in two close matches recently. They edged out Civil Service B 6-4, with Andy Smith, John Terry and James Bird all contributing with wins, and they also won the doubles. They then lost to Winchcombe Eagles by the same score, and although the Cheltenham side were again successful in the doubles, a maximum for Eagle’s Daniel Crook had already helped to ensure victory. For Cheltenham, all three of Andy Smith’s sets went to five games, but he was only successful in one.

Saracen F’s superior technique was good enough to give them a 7-3 win over Winchcombe Eagles. Dave Foulser won all three of his sets, but the best encounter was that between Eagle’s Tiffany Hopton and Tony Walsh, Tiffany winning through in the fifth game.

Second placed Tirley Tigers were beaten 6-4 by the side just below them, thanks principally to another maximum for Tewkesbury C’s Mike Maxwell. Tirley’s hopes of sharing the spoils were dashed when they lost the doubles in three straight games.

Mike Brook led Cheltenham H to a 6-4 win over Cheltenham J, his maximum including a long encounter against Sean Whitelow which Mike won 12-10 in the final game. The only other five set match was won by his colleague Emma Hiscoke who beat Andy Sutherland. Andy and Sean both recorded wins over Carey Maisey.

Cheltenham G 6 Civil Service B 4
Cheltenham G 4 Winchcombe Eagles 6 D. Crook
Saracens F 7 Winchcombe Eagles 3 D. Foulser
