Report For 26/1/08
Division One
Division One's season has
not yet resumed after the Christmas break.
Division Two
It's 'Sim'ple for Terry
Terry Sims was in impressive form as he claimed a maximum to
condemn Cheltenham D to a 7-3 defeat at the
hands of Saracens B. He won all three of his
games, including a tight five-setter with the in-form Alan Harvey, to send his
team towards victory. Mike Dodwell chipped in with two wins, whilst Ross
Greening won once. Matt Mulcahy was the pick of Cheltenham’s players, completing
a brace, although Harvey was unlucky to lose two games in the deciding fifth
set. Dodwell and Sims then completed an excellent doubles win over Harvey and
Mulcahy, winning 13-11 in the decider.
Saracens C completed an excellent 6-4 away win over Tewkesbury A. No player was able to claim a maximum on the night as styles of play took their toll. Niall Pawsey won twice for Saracens C, including an excellent win over Rob Amphlett, but he struggled to deal with the heavy chop of John Goodchild. Mark Nally also won twice for Saracens, whilst Amphlett picked up a brace for Tewkesbury. Goodchild, Mike Tyrrell and Tony Iles all picked up one win each. Nally and Pawsey combined well to take the deciding doubles and lead Saracens C to an impressive away victory.
CCS A crushed Tirley Tigers 10-0 thanks to maximums from Steve Murton, Dave Hart and Jon Nixon. Nixon’s match with Lesley Dewick was a tight five-setter and Dewick can consider herself very unlucky to have come away with nothing. It was great to see Elaine Evans making her first appearance of the season too.
Newlands Park B drubbed club colleagues Newlands Park D 10-0, although the individual matches were far closer than the score line suggests. However, it was maximums from Andy East, Andy Richards and Ken Smith that sent Newlands Park B to the top of the division for the first time since the opening week of the season. Chris Ball had a titanic battle with Richards, going down in a valiant contest 12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12.
Cheltenham D completed a 10-0 whitewash against bottom club Tirley Tigers, but it was a titanic contest that could have easily finished in a draw. On a night of gales and floods the players hoped for an early finish with the fear of not getting back home. However, it turned out to be one of the longest matches of the season for both teams. Maximums for Alan Harvey, Chris James and Matt Mulcahy ensured full points for Cheltenham. However, five matches went to five sets and both Elaine Evans and Elaine Marshall can consider themselves extremely unfortunate to come away empty handed. Evans lost twice in the fifth, going down both times 11-9 in the decider, whilst all three of Marshall’s games were decided in the fifth set, the closest of these when she was up against James, in which she narrowly avoided victory, losing 17-15.
Tewkesbury A escaped with a 5-5 draw against Newlands Park C. Barrie Pope won all three of his matches, including a good five set win over Rob Amphlett. Chris White was pushed all the way by John Goodchild, coming back from 2-0 down to win 11-9 in the fifth. Amphlett and Goodchild combined well to win the doubles and secure a draw.
Cheltenham C remain undefeated, but they came up against a spirited Saracens C team who played some inspired table tennis. John Gaskill retained his 100% record for the season and he was completely untroubled in this fixture, winning all three of his games without breaking sweat. However, Tony Iles won twice for Saracens C, impressively defeating Dave Green and Matt Mulcahy, whilst Niall Pawsey also condemned Green to a surprising defeat.
Newlands Park D and Saracens B clashed in an entertaining encounter in which Saracens B claimed a narrow victory. Mike Dodwell and Terry Sims both won twice for Saracens and Ross Greening once to put them ahead going into the doubles. Mike Gleeson and Chris Ball both claimed braces for Newlands Park D, with Gleeson claiming a good win over Dodwell, and Ball hammering Sims in straight sets. The deciding doubles went to the obligatory fifth set, and having been 2-0 down, Saracens B came back to win and secure the overall victory.
Cheltenham D enjoyed their second win in a week with a 7-3 victory over CCS A, despite having to call on a young player from Division 3. Alan Harvey recorded a maximum and Matt Mulcahy chipped in with two wins. Dave Hart was the stand out player for CCS A, winning two matches with relative ease. He also had a close game with Harvey, but went down in four close sets. Karl Foster, playing up from Division 3, recorded an impressive five set win over Jon Nixon, winning 8-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9.
