Team Whitewash Smiths
Chelsea Building Society A played
struggling Cheltenham C this week which saw Simon Moysey
playing well to take his first maximum of the season. Simon was supported by his
team mates Dave Metcalfe and Dominic Wynn-Sands who each won two to take a 7-3
victory. John Gaskell played well for Cheltenham to take a duo of
wins beating Dave and Dominic and giving Simon a very close four games.
Cheltenham B
played Saracens A in a game that saw Brian McRandal of
Saracens in top form yet again to take a maximum that
included a second successive victory over Dave Harvey. This
match also saw the debut of Paul Perks who transferred from Cheltenham
A due to Michael Harvey having retired from the
game. Although Brian took a maximum, he was pushed to the wire by both Robert
Harvey and Paul Perks. Robert actually had 3 match points in the fourth set
and was unlucky not to take his best scalp of the season. Paul Perks proved
tough opposition before being beaten in a close fifth game. Apparently Brian
is shortly to return to Ireland to live and despite being a cocky obnoxious
old git, he will actually be greatly missed by the Cheltenham Association and
we wish him all the best for the future.
Saracens B and Smiths A were both only able to field
two players which put another slight dent in Smiths race to
the title. Alan Smith of Saracens played well to win his two
which included a good win over the in-form Matt Hartwell of Smiths.
Alan and Judy then combined to win the doubles and take the match by five
games to four.
Cheltenham A played struggling Smiths B and came away with a maximum points win putting them well in contention with Smiths A for the Division 1 title. The Cheltenham A team comprising of Gordon Shaw, Milan Dragojlovic and Dan Kolesnik overcame the Smiths team of Andy Richards, Ken Smith and Andy East with relative ease.

Tewkesbury Beat Leaders
Tewkesbury A
recorded an impressive 6-4 away win over Division Two leaders Smiths C.
In a hugely competitive and enjoyable match, Tewkesbury raced into a
commanding lead. Rob Amphlett defeated both Graham Chandler and Paul Singh,
whilst Simon Lockley overcame Chandler and Mike Tyrrell, in a very closely
fought five-set contest, defeated former playing partner Singh. However,
Smiths clawed their way back into the match. Barrie Pope completed wins over
Lockley and Tyrrell, whilst Chandler and Singh picked up a win apiece. With the
match tied at 4-4, the tide turned Tewkesbury’s way. In a hugely
entertaining game, Amphlett completed his maximum by overcoming Pope 12-10,
4-11, 6-11, 11-8, 16-14. He then partnered Tyrrell to complete a four set
doubles win, securing a famous victory.
Saracens C were in blistering form as they tore apart CCS A 9-1. Maximums for Mike Dodwell and Ross Greening and a brace for Terry Sims highlighted Saracens’ superiority. Steve Murton picked up CCS A’s only point by defeating Sims in straight sets. Murton said, 'Saracens were far too strong for an off-form CCS A side tonight.'

Mike Maxes Out Against James
Tewkesbury B’s
Mike Maxwell lost his 100% record at the hands of Chris James of Cheltenham F.
Chris himself has yet to lose a set in this division, but has only played a
handful of matches, and has also been ‘playing up’ in the second division for
Cheltenham D. Chris finally came through 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 7-11, 14-12. The
Cheltenham side won through 6-4 thanks to a narrow win in a five game
doubles.
Tewkesbury found life somewhat easier against Chelsea B, and although they won 10-0, they had to survive several tight sets.
Two wins each for Andy Sutherland, Zac France and Matt Roberts of Cheltenham J ensured a 6-4 victory over Civil Service B, for whom Rob Browning won all three sets. Only one set went to five games, and in this Andy overcame Alan Thomas 11-7 in the fifth.
Winchcombe Eagles overcame Civil Service 9-1, but had to work very hard to achieve that result. Most of the sets went to four or five games, including the doubles, where Tiffany Hopton and Mick Holder eventually came out on top 11-4 in the fifth against Geoff Foster and Alan Thomas.
Saracens F headed straight back to the top of the division with an emphatic 10-0 win over Cheltenham J. Martin Cosnette stepped in whilst team mate Dave Foulser was on holiday and recorded a maximum to maintain his 100% record. Saracens lead the division by a single point over Tirley Tigers but have a game in hand.
