Newlands B Beat Nearest Rivals
Saracens B entertained Newlands Park B in a top three match this week, but consistency of play from the away team ultimately proved to be too much to overcome for the home side and they were well beaten by an 8-2 score line. For Newlands Park B, Andy Richards’ tenacity secured a maximum for him with both Ken Smith and Andy East winning two apiece. Mike Dodwell fought back from last week’s disappointment in losing all three to manage two excellent victories, but he could not overcome Richards who was in imperious form, going down 11-8 in the fifth. To increase their advantage, Newlands Park B also won the doubles.

Newlands Park D claimed an excellent 6-4 win against Saracens C, thanks largely to the impressive form of Mike Gleeson, who picked up yet another maximum. Chris Ball won twice for Newlands Park D, whilst Julie Taylor chipped in with one win. Tony Iles, Mark Nally and Niall Pawsey all claimed one win each for Saracens C, and the Iles/Nally combination secured a valuable point in the doubles with an excellent win over Ball and Taylor in a sensational contest: 11-7, 11-13, 12-10, 9-11, 13-11.

Tewkesbury A had to work hard to overcome a determined Tirley Tigers 7-3. Mike Tyrrell claimed a maximum for Tewkesbury without dropping a set, and Rob Amphlett, despite suffering from a sickness bug, also won all three, ably supporting him. Lesley Dewick and Pete Humble both secured good wins over John Goodchild for Tirley. They then combined excellently in the doubles to condemn the Amphlett/Tyrrell partnership to defeat in four close sets.

Newlands Park C picked up their third win in a row with a 6-4 away win against Cheltenham D. Barrie Pope was the best player on the night, winning all three of his singles matches. Chris White won twice for Newlands Park C, whilst Alan Harvey did likewise for Cheltenham D. Harvey partnered Matt Mulcahy in the doubles and secured a win that reduced the deficit to just two points.

CCS A suffered a heavy defeat at home to league leaders Cheltenham C. John Gaskill and Anand Kershav both claimed maximums, although Kershav was pushed all the way to 12-10 in the fifth set in his match with Dave Hart. Hart secured CCS A’s only point with victory over Christine Williams, although Steve Murton can consider himself unlucky to lose to Williams, going down 13-11 in the fifth set.

In a match brought forward due to forthcoming special events for Saracens D team members, Cheltenham C stretched their lead at the top of the table with a convincing whitewash of their opponents. John Gaskill, Dave Green and Anand Kershav all claimed easy maximums; indeed only three sets went the way of Saracens D all night long. Saracens D should not feel too down, however – Cheltenham C have been in outstanding form, and Gaskill is still yet to be pushed, let alone beaten.
