A Week Of
Injuries
First of all, please accept my
apologies for the lack of recent reports due to a serious back injury sustained
at the Hereford Vets Tournament and only a week after my marriage to Nikola
:o) Additionally as this is my first report of 2007, may I take this
opportunity to wish fellow players, friends and colleagues a Happy, Prosperous
and enjoyable 2007.
A weakened Chelsea Building Society A team entertained the Cheltenham B comprising of the Harvey Trio. With Guy Greening injured and Bill Dawe unavailable, this was always going to be an up hill struggle. However, Dominic Wynn-Sands played excellently and only just missed out to Mike Harvey in a fast counter hitting and loop exchange. All five games were won 11-9 with Mike just holding on in the fifth, where Dominic rallied from 10-7 down to narrowly lose in the final game. Surprisingly, Dominic also took a game off Dave Harvey before losing in the fourth.
The Winchcombe Cavaliers played Saracens A in what can only be described as a week of injuries. Pete Wood for the Saracens had only played 5 shots in his opening game and had to retire with a pulled muscle in his arm. Personally having seen Pete retire from the Hereford Vets Tournament, (that makes two of us) I would be surprised if this injury were not more serious. Apart from this dismal start, it was a hard fought match where Suzy Robinson fought hard to take a maximum for the Saracens, despite being taken the distance by both Darrell Wiltshire and Guy Bridgewater. A supportive two games were won by Richard Moores, with the Cavaliers managing to win the doubles to secure the draw.
The Winchcombe Wizards entertained a weakened Smiths B who were a player short. This helped the Wizards to gain valuable points which they took full advantage of winning by a score line of 9-1. A maximum by Choi Sze To and Nick Davidson, supported by two wins by Chris Lane ensured a good win for the Wizards who then went on to take the doubles.

Two
Warriors Defeat Saracens
Smiths C
claimed a 7-3 win over battling Cheltenham D in a closely fought contest.
An easy maximum for Paul Singh was the highlight of the evening and braces from
Barrie Pope and Chris White adequately supported him. Alan Harvey picked up a
good five-set win over White. Richard Gummow was unfortunate to lose to Barrie
Pope in five sets. Cheltenham continued their remarkable run of winning
every doubles match this season by claiming victory in their 12th
successive match, this time through the combination of Gummow and Matt Mulcahy.
Winchcombe Warriors put in a commanding performance to sweep aside Saracens D 7-3. Maximums for Mike Vick and Richard Bishop did the damage, and they were rarely pushed, apart from Vick requiring five sets to overcome Mark Nally. They combined to thrash Nally and Tony Iles in the doubles.
Tewkesbury A returned to action with a stunning 8-2 win over in-form CCS A. A straight-sets maximum for Rob Amphlett and braces for Mike Tyrrell and John Goodchild secured the win. Several of the matches were tight. Goodchild overcame Steve Murton 11-9 in the fifth, but lost in five sets to Dave Hart, having been 2-1 up. Tyrrell defeated Hart 11-9 in the fifth, only to lose 11-8 to Murton in the fifth. Amphlett and Goodchild claimed a straightforward win in the doubles.
Saracens C kept up their good run of recent form with a 7-3 win over Smiths D. Yet another maximum from Mike Dodwell and a straight-sets maximum for Dennis Wadley led the way. Terry Sims won once, but was unlucky to lose his other two games, against Mike Gleeson and Chris Ball, 11-9 in the fifth set on each occasion. A tight doubles affair saw Ball and Julie Taylor defeat Dodwell and Wadley in five close sets, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 10-12, 12-10.

this result, his five game victory over Rob Browning being the key set.
Tewkesbury’s Gill Smith was involved in two five setters, losing out to
Geoff Foster, but narrowly getting the better of Alan Thomas.
Tirley Tigers were too strong for Cheltenham H, winning comfortably 10-0, and Cheltenham F won by the same score against Cheltenham J.
