Newlands Park B Pushing
The Leaders
A maximum for Chris Ball
ensured that Newlands Park D emerged
victorious against CCS A by a scoreline of
6-4. His three wins included an 11-9 five-set defeat of Steve Murton, who was
also unlucky to go down to the brace-winning Julie Taylor, 11-8 in the fifth.
David Hart won twice for CCS A and Jon Nixon picked up an excellent win over
Mike Gleeson. An excellent five-set victory in the doubles by CCS A, courtesy of
Hart and Murton, ensured that the home team almost claimed a fair share of the
points.
Table topping Cheltenham C cruised to a 9-1 win over Newlands Park C thanks to maximums from John Gaskill and Anand Keshav, and a brace from Christine Williams. Barrie Pope secured Newlands Park C’s solitary point with a good four set victory over Williams.
Newlands Park B are hot on the heels of the leaders with a game in hand, after a hard-fought 9-1 victory against a rapidly improving Saracens C. Ken Smith was in imperious form, and was relatively untroubled on his way to yet another maximum. Andy East also won all three, but Mark Nally put up stiff resistance and was unlucky to go down 11-8 in the fifth set. Nally was also unfortunate in five sets when losing out to Andy Richards, having forced himself back in the contest after being 2-0 down. Tony Iles secured an impressive straight sets win over Richards to ensure that Saracens C picked up a point, which was surely the least they deserved after such a solid performance.
