Gloucestershire County Closed Championships 2009/10

Depleted numbers attended the annual Gloucestershire Closed Table Tennis Championships 2009/10 which were held at the Cheltenham Boys College. Darren Griffin and Dave Harvey managed to battle through to both the final of the Mens' singles and the Veterans' singles competitions. In these nail biting finals Griffin was triumphant in the Mens' singles in a very tight five set match. This is the 17th time that Griffin has won this title. Harvey later won the Mens' Veterans Crown.

Ann Barnes was in fine form and retained her County singles title by beating Melanie Garlick into runners up spot.

Gloucestershire County Veterans Win Premiership Promotion

The Vets 1st Table Tennis Team gained promotion to the Premier Division following the last two games played on Sunday 18th of April, 2009, at Cirencester Deer Park against Berkshire's 1st team and Kent 2nd team.

Going into the last two matches the County side were unbeaten, as they had won their last five encounters. As a result of this, promotion appeared to be a certainty, however in reality, this was far from the truth.

The first match against Berkshire 1st team was a tense affair which Gloucestershire needed to win, as the second placed side (Dorset, who had been well beaten by the County in an earlier round of matches), had now gained a superior sets advantage, which meant that another drawn game would not be enough for promotion.

At 4-3 down, the prognosis did not look good, however the County rallied and went into the last game with a 5 4 lead and needed to win the last game, which was a mixed doubles, contested by the home sides Dave Adamson & Julie Taylor.

In a real nail biting, cliff hangar of a match, the score was level at 2 games all and 8 all in the final game. Gloucestershire went 10 - 8 up and then 10-9 before they eventually won 11-9 much to the relief of the whole side. The coolness of Dave & Julie under the most strenuous of pressures, was unbelievable.

The second match played against Kent 2nd resulted in a 5 - 5 drawn encounter which was marred by the fact of two sustained injuries to the Kent team, forcing one person to withdraw from the last singles (having previously sustained a head injury by falling headlong into a brick wall) and the second injury was sustained by the Kent no 1 player who suffered a very bad bruise to his hand when he smashed same accidentally on the corner of the table whist playing Dave Harvey.

Representing Gloucestershire were Dave Harvey, Darren Griffin, Dave Adamson, Julie Taylor & Jacque Carver who all contributed well to the success of the team. Judy Morley (the county Vets no 1 who had previously won a lot of key games) and Bill Dawe (who again won several important matches), were the other players who helped secure promotion for the first side.

Darren was distinguished as winning all 14 singles and Dave Harvey lost just the one from 14 games.

Gloucestershire Firsts Maintain Premiership Place With Last Gasp Wins

The senior county side exceeded all expectations by maintaining their position in the Premier County Table tennis League, when they finished a very creditable 6th out of 8 Teams. In the 4 matches played they won 2, drew 1 and lost 1.

From what seemed an impossible position going into the last round of 4 matches, and routed firmly at the bottom of the league table with no points from the first three matches, it appeared that relegation was inescapable as they were 3 points adrift behind the two sides above them.

The first match resulted in a draw against Bucks with Ann Barnes securing the vital win against a very good attacking player by consistent use of her devastating forehand loop and the next match against Durham resulted in a win by 6 games to 4. Suddenly a glimmer of hope appeared that they could survive relegation applicable to the last two teams, but this meant that they had to beat either Sussex (who were 2nd in the Division) or Middlesex who again were riding high.

Against all expectations, the County secured a 6-4 sets victory against Essex and all of the competitors secured excellent wins against much higher ranked opposition, but none was more dramatic than Dan Kolesnik's truly remarkable victory against Clive Carthy, who had earlier also fallen prey to Dave Harvey in 4 sets. At 10-4 down in the fifth set, all looked lost for Dan, as he was facing 6 match points. However Dan had other ideas and by ferocious attacking play, amazingly reeled off the next 8 points in a row to secure a famous 12-10 win. If the result had gone against Dan, the County would have been relegated on set difference, such was the importance of this victory.

Choi Sze To (ex Hong Kong Junior International) also contributed well in securing two very good wins against the middle east mother & daughter pairing, who are both ranked higher in the National Rankings. One of the matches was very tense and was won by 11-9 in the deciding 5th set.

Earlier Darren Griffin secured the 6-4 win against Durham with an excellent win against Mike Marsden, the No. 12 ranked player in England, in 4 sets and Dave Harvey just failed to repeat the same result losing closely in the fifth against the same player.

In the last match, the County lost quite heavily by a score of 9 sets to 1 and the saviour of the whitewash was Suzy Robinson, whose excellent exhibition of fast loops on both wings completely destroyed the highly rated Sarah Horsnell in three straight sets.

The two teams who were relegated were Durham & Devon (who in recent years were the county champions on two occasions).

This was an excellent result achieved by all players who far and away exceeded any hopes of survival this year which means that the County can look forward to a third successive season in the Premier Division.

The support, coaching and encouragement by all of the players to all of the team was crucial and contributed significantly to the success achieved.

County Championships
Senior and Veteran Results

After putting in a wonderful performance last season to remain in the County premiership, the Gloucestershire First team are struggling to find form this year.  In their first round matches they were competing against some very strong opposition.  The unluckiest player of this series of matches was Suzy Robinson, who put in a valiant performance only to lose three of her six matches at deuce in the fifth and final set.

The results of their matches are as follows.

Gloucestershire 1 v Derbyshire 9

Gloucestershire 3 v Devonshire 7

Gloucestershire 2 v Sussex 8

It is hoped that if the team can maintain their current form, they will be able to gain promotion to the County Veterans Premiership to play against the elite players at Veteran level , which will be the first time that our County’s players will have achieved this status.

Gloucestershire County Senior Table Tennis Results

In the last round of the County Table Tennis Championships, Gloucestershire earned the right to stay in the Premiership. In their first year in the Premiership, the players knew they were going to have to work very hard in order to maintain their status. Gloucestershire knew that they had to beat both Leicestershire and Berkshire to avoid relegation and raised their games to achieve this goal.

A squad of Gloucestershire players travelled to Hall Green in Birmingham to compete. The squad consisted of Dave Harvey, Darren Griffin, Brian McRandle, Suzy Robinson, Choi Sze Toi and Natasha Hurd. They competed over two days against Berkshire, Devonshire, Leicestershire and Essex with mixed results. Natasha Hurd was the player of the weekend winning all her games in the two matches that she played in.

Gloucestershire 2 v Devonshire 8

In this match the team knew they were going to have their work cut out as Devonshire were one of the teams competing for the Premiership title. Darren Griffin must have thought he was in with a very good chance of beating Craig Bryant, who is highly ranked in England, when he was leading in the fifth and final set. Unfortunately this was not meant to be as Bryant went into overdrive and stole the game away winning
11 - 8. Griffin did manage a win in this county encounter by beating Jon May over four sets.

Choi Sze Toi also won a game for Gloucestershire beating Sally Smith in five sets.

Essex 7 v Gloucestershire 3

Essex, also one of the teams who began the weekend with hopes of winning the title also finished well and they beat Gloucestershire 7-3.

Clive Carthy and Sarra Wang both won twice with Clive’s 11-8 in the fifth set victory against Dave Harvey the closest of the match. Fellow Veteran, Darren Griffin, beat both of Essex’s “young pretenders” – Vytas Rybakas and Ashley Stokes in five ends. Sarra Wang produced her best performance of the weekend beating Choi Sze Toi 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.

Leicestershire 3 v Gloucestershire 7

Dave Harvey won both of his encounters with fair ease. He beat Keith Fellows over four sets and then took down Chris Rogers over three sets to earn his county points.

Darren Griffin and Brian McRandle also won points for the county by both beating Amrish Rana. Griffin crushed Rana in three sets whilst McRandle battled it out over five set to eventually emerge triumphant. Natasha Hurd won her two games with ease against Joanne Kennedy and Karen Smith.  She won both games in three straight sets. Choi Sze Toi also took down Joanne Kennedy in three sets.

Berkshire 4 v Gloucestershire 6

Choi Sze Toi was first to taste victory with a great win in four sets over Melanie Farquhar who is ranked in the top 20 senior ladies in England.  She also went on to beat Susan Johnson over five sets. Natasha Hurd also beat Farquhar with ease over four sets and Johnson over three sets.

Darren Griffin won maximum points for Gloucestershire with a win in three sets over Martin Adams and in four sets over Richard Andrews.

Gloucestershire finish in 6th place in the Premiership table.

Cheltenham Veterans Vs. Loughborough - March 2nd '08

A closely fought match with Loughborough fighting back from an early 3-0 deficit saw Cheltenham win by a 6-4 margin.  The win was sealed in the final match by Keith Ferguson who squeezed in with an 11-9 score in the final game.  Keith was in fine form and gained a maximum three wins ably assisted by acting Captain Chris Lane who chalked up 2 wins and Graham Chandler who chipped in with a win.  The unluckiest person was Loughborough’s Brian Savage who did not win a match but got to the fifth game of all of his sets only to loose on each occasion.  Malcolm Allsop won 2 sets for Loughborough with David Green their Captain winning 1 set.  Loughborough also won the doubles.

Report By Mike Dodwell

Cheltenham Vets Vs. Birmingham - Sunday 10th February '08

Cheltenham Veterans battled for a well earned draw away against Birmingham “E” in The Midland League, Division 4. For Birmingham both Brian Morris and George Hutton won 2 sets apiece with Steve Smith earning 1 set.  For Cheltenham Mike Dodwell fought to overcome the dogged Birmingham resistance to earn 2 sets with Rob Amphlett and Paul Singh both digging in to win 1 set apiece.  The fine combination of Rob Amphlett and Paul Singh saw Cheltenham triumph in the doubles for a very hard earned draw against a team that has not been beaten this season.  As ever the après-snacks and drinks made for a most convivial conclusion to a competitive, but sporting match.

Report By Mike Dodwell

Cheltenham Veterans Start 2008 With A Bang!

Cheltenham Veterans managed their first victory of the season with a convincing 9-1 win over Hinckley. Darrell Wiltshire and Andy East both won 3 sets apiece with Mike Dodwell managing 2 sets and conceding 1 set to Richard Chesters. Darrell and Andy both won their sets with open attacking play and repeated this style to capture the doubles over the Hinckley pairing of Richard Chesters and Terry Lucas. Whilst the match was played in a competitive nature it was also very sporting in approach, which was highlighted by the social après-table tennis refreshment banter.

Gloucestershire Veterans v Herefordshire

Gloucestershire Veterans players entertained Herefordshire at home in the latest round of the County Championships. There was lots of camaraderie between the two teams with many of the players knowing each other for many years.

In the first match Bill Dawe took on Mark Owen in a close encounter that saw Dawe losing to Owen in the fourth set.

Next to perform was Dave Adamson against Dave White. The favourite for the games was Adamson who had beaten White only two weeks earlier in a league match in Cheltenham.  Adamson went two sets up and then crumpled as White gained speed and cruised through winning the next three sets.

Next up was Dave Harvey against Chris Martin. Harvey who is currently rank number one in the County, performed to his usual high standard winning his game in three straight sets.

Harvey then teamed up with Judy Morley to take on Mark Owen and Helen Green in the mixed doubles. Harvey and Morley won the game and brought the teams level at two wins each.

Dawe then beat White comfortably in four sets. Morley played Helen Green, and lost the first set 7-11 but then crushed Green 11-3, 11-2 and 11-4.

Harvey and Adamson teamed up for the doubles against Owen and White and were unlucky to lose in the 5th set after a magnificent performance.

Adamson then beat Martin very easily in straight sets to take the match to Gloucestershire 5, Herefordshire 3.

It was time for the game that everyone was waiting as Harvey played against Owen. This was an excellent demonstration of Table Tennis that did not disappoint. The game went all the way to the wire with Harvey winning this thriller 11-9 in the fifth and final set.

With a win now in the bag for the Gloucestershire team, Morley and Dawe teamed up to play the last doubles game against Green and Martin.  The Gloucestershire pair won with style 11-5, 12-10, 11-9 to give Gloucestershire and overall 7-3 victory.

So Close Yet So Far!

Charles Dickens wrote his novel Great Expectations and that was the feeling amongst Gloucestershire Table Tennis players last weekend (January 12-13th 2008) as several Veteran Table Tennis players ventured to Hereford Leisure Centre to take part in the Veteran Western Masters Competition. The following Gloucestershire players tackled the weather, gathered their Table Tennis bats and set off for a weekend of competition: Darren Griffin, Dave Harvey, Dave Adamson, Gordon Shaw, Alan Smith, Judy Morley, Roy Morley, Dave Gough and Bob Trimble.

Dave Harvey, Gordon Shaw and Alan SmithDarren Griffin and Dave Harvey who are ranked 13th  and 14th  in England at Veteran level teamed up in the over 40’s event to play in the doubles, whilst Alan Smith teamed up with a scratch partner, Eddie Smith who is ranked 7th

Griffin and Harvey were seeded 4th in the competition and beat defending champions Eddie Roofe and Steve Hall in an early round of the competition. They must have believed that they had a strong chance of making it to the final.  However in the semi final the pair came across Clive Carthy who is ranked 17th and Joe Kennedy who is ranked 4th

At this point hopes and dreams were shattered in a very tough match that saw the Gloucestershire boys get put out by three sets to one. In the other side of the draw Alan Smith and Eddie Smith also got through to the semi finals, where they encountered Abdul Wuraola who is ranked 2nd, and Jimmy Walsh who is ranked 15th.  The two Smiths boys won the first two games and must have felt that the final was in their grasp, however some determined play from Wuraola and Walsh saw the opponents come back to win the next three sets 11-9, 11-9, 11-9.

In the over 40’s singles event Dave Harvey lost to the eventual winner of the competition and the number one seed, Abdul Wuraola, in the semi finals whereas last years champion Darren Griffin lost in the quarter finals to Eddie Smith, a very fine left handed player, who is ranked 6 places above Griffin.

In the over 50’s event Dave Harvey is ranked 3rd in England and reached the final beating Keith Williams who is ranked 2nd. But unfortunately in the final Brian Johns who is top of the rankings was too much for Harvey. Despite some magnificent Table Tennis, Harvey settled for runners up spot.

Roy Morley and his Table Tennis partner George Evans who are currently National Champions in their age group teamed up to compete in the over 70’s competition.  Morley and Evans made it right to the final with no problems. However, they were unlucky not to gain glory when they lost to Fred Lockwood and Mervin Wood 11-8 in the fifth and final set, a doubles partnership that Morley and Evans have never lost to before.

In the singles over 70’s event Morley lost in the quarter finals.

Judy Morley seeded number 4 in the over 50’s singles event won through in the group stages of the competition, however, she ran out of steam in round four where she lost to the number 2 seed Sheila King.

Although the Gloucestershire players left empty handed, this event provided a tremendous weekend of table tennis.

Ashford Veterans Table Tennis Competition

Gordon Shaw, Dave Adamson and Dave HarveyChristmas cobwebs were blown away by some of Gloucestershire’s top Veteran table tennis players, Dave Harvey, Dave Adamson, Alan Smith and Gordon Shaw, who travelled to Ashford Table Tennis Club in Middlesex to compete in a Veterans competition.

The competition is initially based on a grouping system where three players all compete against each other in order to establish which band of the competition stage you are entered into.

Dave Harvey in his usual style, won his group and was entered into band A.  He stormed his way through the next few rounds until he met Fred Dove in the semi final where Harvey lost in three straight sets. A surprising exit for Harvey, who is ranked 14th in England whereas Dove is currently ranked at 54th.

Dave Adamson and Alan Smith were runners up in the grouping stage and were entered into the band B competition.  Both Adamson and Smith cruised through the round to reach the semi final stage, fortunately, in opposite halves of the draw.  Luck was not on the side of Adamson in the semi final, as he was put out three sets to one by Ramesh Bhalla who is ranked 109th in England, 25 places above Adamson. Smith however won through to face Bhalla in the final of the band B competition.  Despite Smith's best efforts he was not able to overcome the skills of Bhalla who won the final in three straights sets.

Gordon Shaw was placed third in his group and entered into the band C event.  He won his first round game however lost in round two in a five set game.

As a result of this GORDON BOUGHT THE BEERS!!!

Butterfly Grand Prix
MEDWAY OPEN Championship

Local players, Milan Dragojlovic and Daniel Kolesnik, recently represented Gloucestershire at the Butterfly Grand Prix MEDWAY OPEN Championship, held at the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham, Kent.

Milan played well in the Band 4 Singles and emerged group winner.  On the way to final, Milan beat players with different styles and various "funny rubbers". Namely, Dean Rose (K), Tony Wilkinson (Ml), Chris Turpin (K), Alec Bartlet (K), Sampson Reid (K) and Ken Lewis (Sk).  Milan lost in the final's to player of the weekend Daniel Basterfield (Ml).

In the Band 3 Singles, Milan was less successful as he finished Runner-up in his group, winning in the preliminary round, but losing in the first round.  Milan beat Band 4 seeded player No.2 Simon Dilkes (K)

Daniel Kolesnik in the Band 2 Singles was a formidable opponent to much higher ranked players.  Most memorable and noticed was the win against Martin Smith (Sy), seeded No 4. Kolesnik won in the 5th set in his group.  Dan was winner in his group but went out in the first round.

In the Band 3 Singles, Kolesnik also lost in the first round to eventual Band 3 and Band 4 winner, TTK Greenhouse player Daniel Basterfield, an aggressive topspin attacking player.  Later-on, Dan failed to repeat winning formula in Open Singles and Men's Restricted Singles.

Gloucestershire's top Table Tennis players ventured off for their first competition since winning promotion to the Premiership. Three matches were played at Cippenham Table Tennis Centre, Slough, during a weekend of county competition.

Match 1
Team

Darren Griffin
Dave Harvey
Brian McRandle
Cho Sze To
Suzy Robinson

Having won promotion to the premiership last year, the Gloucestershire team initially struggled against their first opponents Middlesex. They started off by looking as if they were heading for a substantial defeat as they trailed 3-0 and latterly 5-3. However, in the ninth game Gloucestershire's Cho Sze To, put in a stunning performance against Egle Adomelyte who is ranked at number 6 in the Women’s ETTA ranking list, winning 12-10, 6-11, 11-9, 11-3.  This victory then gave Dave Harvey an opportunity to secure a point if he could take the last game of the match. Harvey seized the prize by beating Walsh in five games. Harvey won the first two games, but Walsh was not going down without a fight and came back to two games all. However the determination of Harvey was too much. 12-10, 11-6, 3-11, 7-11, 11-7.  Harvey was also impressive in his match against the all action player Tommy Cutler.  For Middlesex, Neil Charles faired the best beating both Darren Griffin in five games after going two games down and Brian McRandle in four games. Gloucestershire just managed to hang on to a 5-5 draw.

Middlesex 5 v Gloucestershire 5

Match 2
Team
Darren Griffin
Dave Harvey
Brian McRandle
Cho Sze To
Suzy Robinson

In the encounter against Derbyshire, Brian McRandle and Dave Harvey were the only players who were able to achieve wins for the County, by both beating Sam Perry. Ladies Cho Sze To and Suzy Robinson were both robbed in the fifth set by Jane Vickers losing out in the narrowest of margins, deuce.  Darren Griffin lost both of his games in straight sets as a result of an injury.

Gloucestershire 2 v Derbyshire 8

Match 3
Team
Dave Harvey
Brian McRandle
Milan Dragojlovic
Cho Sze To
Suzy Robinson

Milan Dragojlovic made his debut for the County Premiership team in the match against Sussex, replacing injured Darren Griffin. The strength of the Sussex team was overwhelming and saw Cho Sze To being the only player to win a game against Sarah Steadman.  Brian McRandle was very unlucky to lose in the fifth set to Adrian Moore so too was Suzy Robinson who also lost out in five games to Sarah Steadman. Dragojlovic played extremely well but was unable to win any of his games against this very strong side.

Sussex 9 v Gloucestershire 1

Cheltenham Veterans Vs Leamington

Leamington Vets B entertained Cheltenham Vets on Sunday 4th November and just edged the match by a 7-3 score line.  Leamington’s champion was Dong Wei who scored a maximum 3 out of 3, just beating off the efforts of Keith Ferguson by 12 to 10 in the fifth game.  For Cheltenham, acting Captain Chris Lane won 2 sets and the doubles combination of Rob Amphlett and Keith Ferguson was good enough to win another point to record their third success to give a little respectability to the score line.

South West Region Junior Under 12's Competition
held at Oakhampton on Sunday 10th June 2007

10 year old Reuben Stone and Jacob Hayward (8) recently played in the South West Region Junior Under 12's Competition and won 3 of their 5 matches, narrowly losing the other 2 by 3 games to 2.

After count back, the Cheltenham Team won the same number of games in their matches to the runners up and lost second place by the very narrowest of margins by 1 set.

Reuben won 9 of 10 singles and his fast attacking topspin attack saw him win the first 9 games before he eventually lost the final game of the day. Despite this Reuben finished top of the averages in Division 2.

Jacob, despite his relative inexperience, proved that he is a very capable attacking player, and played his part winning 50 % of his 10 games and combined well with Reuben in the doubles, winning 3 of their 5 matches.

This was an excellent series of results and far exceeded what was expected of both boys in this excellent run competition

Harvey Wins English No. 1 And Veterans Title

Dave Harvey (seeded no 3) won the Veterans Table Tennis Grand Prix on Saturday and Sunday 27th May 2007 by defeating the current English No 1 Veteran and 23rd Ranked Senior Man Abdul Wuraola from Surrey in the fifth and final set by the narrowest of margins 13-11 and in doing so saved a total of 3 match points (2 in the 4th set and 1 in the final set).

Judy Morley (who was severely hampered by injury) came runner up in the Veteran Ladies and because of this could not repeat her earlier excellent victory in Hereford against the Vets no 1 ranked Veteran lady player Shu Huang.

The weekend proved to be extremely successful for all other Gloucestershire entrants with Dan Kolesnik, Gordon Shaw, Juniors players Robert Harvey, Milan Dragolovic and Stella Davies all performing extremely well to record several maximum point wins against much higher opponents, which will improve all of their National Rankings when the next monthly list is re-issued in June.

Cheltenham Juniors

Cheltenham Juniors travelled to Chichester on Saturday to play in what was expected to be 4 Junior County Matches to complete Division 1 B, but as Kent did not field a Team, they only played 3 Matches. Starting from a position of equal first, the County eventually finished in third place, which was a very credible performance given that the Counties top 2 Junior boys were unavailable to play in the matches.

The County recorded a 6 -4 win against Middlesex 1sts,  a 5-5 draw against Surrey 1sts and sustained a very narrow 6-4 loss againsst Sussex 1sts.

Stella Davies showed her class and won all of her 6 singles with comparative ease.

Milan Dragojlovic also played well and only lost one of his 6 singles matches and Rob Harvey won 2 of his 5 singles played.

Niall Pawsey and Emma Mollinson gave a very good account of themselves and attacked well, and were unlucky not to have recorded any victories as several of their games were very closely contested.

Gloucestershire Veteran's Win

Gloucestershire Veteran's represented by Dave Adamson, Guy Greening, Alan Smith and Judy Morley played Hertfordshire away this weekend (17/2/07) and ran out winners by 8-2. Guy Greening who is still recovering from a recent back injury lost one, and then combined with Dave Adamson in the men's doubles. Hertfordshire managed to claim the doubles but not the match. Greening has since retired from league play for the remainder of the season so that his back can recover.

Midland Veterans League Report

In a close and competitive match in the Midland Veterans League 4, Birmingham E  just edged out the host team Cheltenham by 6 sets to 4 to inflict Cheltenham’s first defeat of the season.  The star of the match was Birmingham’s Bob Brown who persevered with his forehand attacking strategy to win all of his three sets and was aided by Dean Hicks (2) and Steve Pinder (1).  For Cheltenham Keith Ferguson captured 2 sets and partnering Rob Amphlett also took the doubles.  The final set for Cheltenham was won by Mike Dodwell.

County Seniors Win Promotion To Premier Division

The  County Senior Table Tennis Team played all 7 matches over one weekend and came away with 6 victories and 1 draw which ensured promotion to the Premier Division for the second time in 2 years after a previous absence of  nearly 40 years. All 6 players performed extremely well, with each player winning over 50% of their games.

Against Glamorgan Suzy Robisonson recovered from 10-6 down in the fifth to win the crucial game 12-10, but none was more notable than Natasha Hurd's excellent win against the No.10 Nationally ranked Marcia Ma in the very last match against Surrey, where a draw was needed to secure promotion. After a scintillating attacking match, Natasha secured the vital win to maintain her unbeaten record and thus gain the draw to ensure promotion to the elite Premier Division next year. Choi Sze To (newly acquired ex Hong Kong Junior international) played really well and only lost 1 of her 6 games.

Comment by Peter Cruwys
In my long association with the County Table Tennis teams there has never been a better performance for over 40 years. It is an incredible achievement to play 4 matches on the Saturday and 3 matches on the Sunday and win 6 and draw 1. Natasha Hurd came from Brussels by train and played with an awful cold on both days, but still managed to won all her sets. Choi Sze To, the young Hong Kong girl in her first match for Gloucestershire won 5 out of 6 and beat opponents ranked well above her. The men all played well, especially when the match score was critical. Three of the Gloucestershire team are home grown players, Dave Harvey (Gloucester), Darren Griffin (Cheltenham) and Suzie Robinson (Stroud). Natasha came from Wales, Brian McRandal from Northern Ireland, and Choi Sze To from Hong Kong. A truly exceptional team. If we can keep this team for next season for the Premier Division we should hold our place in that Division.

Griffin Takes The Heat To Win Hereford Grand Prix

Darren Griffin (County Senior ranked No 1 table tennis player) played brilliantly to lift the Over 40 singles event from an unseeded position in the Hereford Grand Prix played last weekend. Darren, who only this year qualified for the Vets circuit, was matched against the no 2 seed in the final - Paul Giles and won an exhilarating attacking match which was full of counter hitting loop rallies and eventually triumphed in the fifth and  final game by 11 points to 9.

In earlier rounds Darren disposed of other highly ranked players including 3 former winners of the National Singles title, namely Steve Hall, Benny Robertson and Clive Carthy without the loss of a single set, showing how dominant he was in this event. This result will elevate Darren into the upper reaches of the Vets ETTA Rankings, towards his own objective of securing the No.1 spot. Dave Harvey also competed in the same tournament and lost in the quarter final stages, but won the over 50's title and in combination with Dave Adamson (who showed just why he is one of the best Doubles exponents in the country) came runner up in the Vets Over 50's doubles.

Gloucestershire County Closed Results

Darren Griffin narrowly won the Men's Singles crown for the 10 successive year when he beat Dave Harvey in 5 close sets winning 12-10 in the final game after saving 3 match points and recovering from 10-7 down in the final set. In the semi finals Darren was pushed to 5 sets by Matt Hartwell and Dave (who was fortunate to beat his elder 17 year old son Mike Harvey in 5 close games in the quarter finals) beat his friend and old rival Bill Dawe in 4 close games.

The Ladies Singles was retained by Cho Sze To who beat Stella Davies in 3 keenly contested games. In the semis To was pushed all the way by Ann Barnes eventually coming through 11-9 in the fifth, whilst Stella overcame Mel Garlick in 4 sets.

The Junior Boys Singles was retained by Mike Harvey (who beat the no 2 seed Milan Dragojlovic in 4 close sets). In the semis Mike was paired against his younger brother Robert and narrowly won 11-8 in the fifth game, whilst Milan reached the same stage untroubled by his opponents.

The Men's Doubles was won by the new pairing of Bill and Milan who defeated the holders of the last 2 years (Mike and Dave Harvey) in straight sets, whilst the Ladies Doubles matched the top two pairings of Stella Davies and Ann against To and Garlick. This was a very close match which saw the no 1 seeds just triumph in the fifth set by 11-8.

The Vets Singles was narrowly won in 5 sets by Dave over Bill and the Vets Ladies was won by Janie Kirby who defended well to beat the solid attacking game of Clare Bell in straight sets.

Not surprisingly, the Junior Girls Singles was won easily by Stella Davies as was the under 15 singles by Milan, who overcame plucky, spirited resistance from his younger adversary Karl Foster.

Nicola Sadie won the under 15 girls singles against Florence Butler in an exciting attacking encounter in 4 sets.

The Junior Girls Doubles was won by the no 2 pairing of Emma Mollinson and Emma Hiscoke who beat the top seeds Lucy Parsons and Helen Li, in 4 sets.

Another upset occurred in the Under 13 Boys event, won by the no 2 seed
Karl Foster who overcame the top seed Matt Williams.

Sam White showed his class by easily winning the Consolation Singles
without losing a single set.

Gill Smith very efficiently ran the tournament, expertly assisted by Peter Cruwys and the Chairman of the County Association Les Smith presented all of the trophies.

Gloucestershire Juniors Win Promotion To National Division One

The County Junior team recorded three fine victories on Saturday 2nd of April in Sussex defeating Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Sussex in an exciting finale to the season.  Gloucestershire beat both Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire 9:1, where Gloucestershire’s experience and power proved too much for their opponents.

This set up a great final match against Sussex who were, at this point, one point clear at the top of the table. In the first two sets, quality Sussex players James Rivers and Owen Lee beat Harry Shahlaei and Sam White in two full-on high scoring encounters. Next, despite battling bravely against the skillful Sally Hughes, Gloucestershire player Annabel Sidwell went down in three to give Sussex a 3 – nil lead. Next up for the County side was Mike Harvey. Mike, in fine form recently, made short work of beating the Sussex No.1 Ashley Miles in three games, then despite a shaky start, Stella Davis pulled it back to 3-2 totally outclassing Alison Woodland of Sussex.  At the half-way stage, Gloucestershire had to win 4 out of 5 of the remaining sets to win the match.  Sam White started well by beating James Rivers in 5,  with one of the games going 18-16 to Sam. Next Annabel Sidwell found Alison Woodland too much for her, leaving Gloucestershire  4-3 down with everything to do in the last three sets. Harry Shahlaei and Stella Davis then won their next two sets in 4 games, never certain but battling all the way to set up a final high pressure encounter for Mike Harvey.  At 4-5 up, a drawn match would not be enough to ensure 1st place. Mike Harvey proved more than equal to the task, giving the Sussex player no chance in an awesome display to seal the match and the division 2 top spot for Gloucestershire.  Promotion to National Division 1 for the County will give the team a big challenge and opportunities for two younger players to step up and replace Annabel Sidwell and Sam White who move out of the Junior age group next season.

Many thanks to Richard White for this report.

Gloucestershire Juniors top the table after three great victories!

Round 2 of the County Championships went off with a bang for the Gloucestershire Junior Team on Saturday 7th of January 2006 at the Kent table tennis centre in Gillingham.  The juniors played three counties and beat all of them convincingly to make it 4 out of 5 wins and a top place in division 2D.

Sussex 3:  3   Gloucestershire:  7
Harry Shahlaei made short work of the Sussex number 2 who had no answer to Harry’s speed and power, next Sam White had a similarly comprehensive victory against the Sussex number 3. Then came Annabel Sidwell playing an experienced Sussex girl and going down in 3 games. Mike Harvey then beat the Sussex number 1 in three straight with a powerful display to which his opponent had no answers. Next Stella Davis, returning to the team after missing the opening matches of the season, beat a talented Sussex girl in three games, never looking in any danger.  Next up was Sam who, after an easy first set and now looking tired, never really got going and lost to an inferior opponent on a dubious edge call. Annabel then went to 5 games with a strong opponent, losing out 14:12 in the final game – a great effort!  Harry finished off his next opponent without breaking sweat which put Stella in a position to clinch the match for Gloucestershire.  This she did but not without a tough 5 games where the early start that morning was beginning to tell. Mike Harvey proved much too good for the last man and completed the victory 7-3 for Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire: 8   Surrey: 2
Mike Harvey started well going two games up against a strong Surrey number 1 but the tide turned as the Surrey player began to raise his game to match Mike point for point.  In the fifth game, Mike raised the standard another notch which was just too much for the Surrey player although this was the best game of the day so far.  Next Sam White, still fuming from his earlier defeat and now fully awake, beat his opponent in 3 very aggressive, fast games. The Surrey player did not know what hit him!   Stella Davis then had a comfortable victory to make it  3 - 0. Harry Shahlaei met the Surrey number 2, a talented player with a very fast attacking loop.  This game was a great spectacle with both players attacking and defending to the highest standard. The Surrey player showed extreme athleticism with a number of spectacular defensive shots, at one point swapped his bat to lob a return with his left hand and shortly afterwards winning the point with his right.  Harry raised his game time and time again but this was not enough to stop the Surrey player. Despite losing 11-9 in the fifth, Harry said this was his most enjoyable game and the crowd certainly agreed with him. Next on was Annabel Sidwell who showed that she can put clever tactics into practice in a match situation, playing very carefully Annabel beat the Surrey number 1 in four games through playing exactly the right way.  Mike then met the Surrey player so comprehensively beaten by Sam earlier but found him a completely different proposition this time, he was clearly disappointed by his earlier performance and raised his game against a tired Mike to win in four. The 5.30am start from Cheltenham was taking its toll on all of the Gloucestershire players.  Annabel then put the record straight with another fine win showing some quality pushing and good forehand attacking play.

Stella Davis followed with a straightforward victory showing why she is such a highly ranked young player.

Sam stepped up to meet the player that had beaten Harry earlier in such a thrilling match.  The team had conferred on the best tactics to overcome the Surrey player’s awesome forehand and decided on a controlled short game with heavy top spin on the third ball.  Sam executed the plan perfectly winning points on the third ball time after time which completely threw the Surrey player off his game. Sam won in the third game by an eight point margin to seal an impressive 8-2 victory for the team.  This match however, really belonged to the girls who were unbeaten and deserve great credit!

Gloucestershire: 7  Kent 2:  3
Mike Harvey opened well by beating a very strong Kent number 1 in four games.  This set was fast and exciting, with Mike showing why he is considered one the best counter-hitters in the junior game.

Sam White beat the Kent number 3 in a very good natured session with both players pulling off some spectacular defending.  After a slow start, Stella Davis cruised to victory over the Kent number 2 who had no answer to Stella’s superior service. Harry Shahlaei then dispatched the Kent number 2 in a fine display of table tennis.  Despite a very hard fight in one game, Annabel Sidwell went down 3-0 to the Kent number 1 who had a good all-round game.  Mike Harvey then beat the Kent number 3 in four games and with the tiredness beginning to show on all the Gloucestershire players, this was a very important victory to take the  team to 5-1 up. Annabel then had a five game thriller against the Kent number 2 finally losing 11-9 in a set that was nip and tuck all the way. Next a tired Harry met the improving Kent number 1 who looked fresh and capable. Harry went 2 nil up but ran out of steam against a very strong opponent to lose the next three games 9, 8, 8. Once again Stella stepped up to the mark and sealed the victory for Gloucestershire at the end of a very long day. With all pressure off, Sam then made it 7:- with a fine victory to round off the day.

Overall this was a superb performance by our young players who took on the whole event with a great team spirit, always willing to help each other and lift the performance when the inevitable low-points threatened.

Well done the juniors!

Thanks to Richard White for this on the spot report

Gloucestershire Veterans Win Somerset 2nds In Convincing Style!

Gloucestershire Veterans recently entertained Somerset in the 4th match of the County Table Tennis Championships and came away with an emphatic victory. The Gloucestershire team reverted to the regular side of Dave Adamson, Guy Greening, Rob Wilsher, and Judy Morley.

Greening and Wilsher won both of their matches, and Adamson was unlucky to lose to Somerset's number 1 Mike Crook 11-8 in the 5th (you could say he was robbed). Judy Morley won her singles match convincingly and combined with Adamson, and then Greening, to win both sets of mixed doubles.

Adamson and Wilsher also won the Men's doubles to make the match score 9-1 to Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire travel away to Hampshire for their next match on Saturday 18th Feb 06, they have now played 4 matches won 3 and lost 1. The Somerset side was Mike Crook 1, Alan Stone 2, Dave Yarde 3, and Jackie Crook.

Thanks to Dave Adamson for the report

Gloucestershire Veterans win unbeaten Middlesex

The County No.2 Dave Harvey, available for the first time this season, made an important contribution for the Gloucestershire Veterans team and helped to inflict the first defeat of the season for MiddlesexHarvey started off well by winning the first game against Maurice Isaacs, winning 3 straight and the final set by a convincing 11-0. Dave Hope battled against Jeff Ailward, and won the first two sets but eventually lost 3 games to 2. Dave Adamson then went on to play Middlesex No.1 Steve Gennari but lost in 4. Harvey then teamed up with Judy Morley for the first game of mixed doubles against Sue Plastow and Gennari and won 3 straight, making the match score up to that point 2-2. Hope then played Isaacs and lost, then Morley evened up the score by beating Plastow.

Middlesex were unable to win another game, with Adamson beating Ailward, Harvey beating GennariAdamson and Harvey teamed up to beat Gennari and Ailward in the Mens' doubles. Hope and Morley beat Isaacs and Plastow in the last mixed doubles.

A good game and a good win for Gloucestershire as Middlesex had entered the match unbeaten after their first two matches.

County Cadets Report 19/10/05
The County Cadets played 4 matches over the weekend of 15th-16th of October 2005, in Division 1B with varied success. All of the participants played well and won
important games as these matches saw the debuts of both Becky Chapman and Nicola Sadie who acquitted themselves very well against strong and experienced opposition.
Becky's sound attacking style of play caused all of her opponents difficulties and Nicola (one of the youngest players competing at 12 years of age) gained an important
win to secure the draw against Berkshire.
All of the boys performed well with Robert Harvey only losing one against the Berkshire No.1 of the 8 games that he played overall. After losing his first 4 games,
Milan Dragojlovic found his form and won the last 4. Jamie Makepiece gave valuable support to the team and his 3 wins were crucial in the overall points gained by the team.
